Scarlett Johansson was born on November 22, 1984, in New York City. Her father, Karsten Johansson, is a Danish architect, and her mother, Melanie Sloan, is a Polish Ashkenazi (German Jewish) producer. She has a twin brother named Hunter Johansson, an older sister named Vanessa Johansson who is also an actress, and a younger brother named Adrian Johansson. She graduated in 2002 from the Professional Children's School in Manhattan, New York. Scarlett Johansson spent half of her time with her father in New York and the other half with her mother in Los Angeles after her parents separated.



Scarlett Johansson made her first appearance on the theater stage at a very young age in the play Sophistry. In 2009, she portrayed Catherine Carbone in the play A View from the Bridge, written by Arthur Miller and directed by Gregory Mosher, sharing the leading role with Liev Schreiber. For this performance, she won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Scarlett Johansson began her film acting career with the 1994 movie North. She gained widespread recognition in 1998 with The Horse Whisperer, in which she starred alongside Robert Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas. She became further known after appearing in the 2001 film Ghost World.

In 2005, Scarlett Johansson starred in The Island alongside Ewan McGregor under the direction of Michael Bay. She later collaborated with renowned director Brian De Palma in The Black Dahlia.

Scarlett Johansson appeared in advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein’s Eternity Moment perfume and became a model for Louis Vuitton in 2005. In February 2006, she posed nude on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine alongside Keira Knightley. In the same year, she was selected as the “Sexiest Woman Alive” by Esquire and FHM, appearing on the May cover of FHM. She also signed a contract with Reebok in 2006 and appeared in its advertising campaigns.

Although she has frequently been romantically linked by the media with celebrities such as Derek Peter, Benicio Del Toro, Jared Leto, Justin Timberlake, and Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson has repeatedly stated that she does not discuss her private life with the media. On September 27, 2008, Scarlett Johansson married Canadian television and film actor Ryan Reynolds in a private family ceremony in Canada. They divorced in January 2011 following Ryan Reynolds’s relationship with actress Blake Lively.

In November 2012, she began a relationship with French journalist Romain Dauriac, and they became engaged in September 2013. She moved to France in 2014, and their daughter, Rose Dorothy Dauriac, was born in September 2014. The couple married in October 2014 and divorced quietly in the summer of 2016.

Released on February 19, 2016, the Coen Brothers’ film Hail, Caesar! featured Scarlett Johansson alongside George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ralph Fiennes, and Frances McDormand.
