Story Overview

Lost in Translation follows Bob Harris (Bill Murray), an aging American actor who travels to Japan to shoot a commercial, only to find himself adrift in a culture he barely understands. Struggling with language barriers, jet lag, and a growing sense of disconnection, Bob drifts through the neon-lit isolation of Tokyo.

At the same hotel, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), a young woman accompanying her photographer husband John (Giovanni Ribisi), faces her own existential uncertainty. While her husband is consumed by work, Charlotte is left alone, questioning her purpose and direction in life.

When Bob and Charlotte meet, their shared sense of alienation forms an immediate and intimate bond. In a city that feels both overwhelming and distant, they find comfort in each other’s company—wandering through Tokyo’s vibrant nightlife, exchanging quiet conversations, and discovering fleeting moments of connection. Their relationship, suspended between friendship and something deeper, becomes a poignant reflection on loneliness, cultural dislocation, and the ephemeral nature of human connection.
