Benedict Cumberbatch was born on 19 July 1976 in Hammersmith, London, as the son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham. He has one sibling named Tracy Tabernacle. At the age of twelve, he began acting in Shakespearean plays. He was educated at the prestigious boarding school Harrow School, where in addition to theater he also developed interests in rugby and painting. After completing school, he spent one year in India as a volunteer English teacher at a Buddhist monastery. He later graduated from the drama department of Manchester University and continued his postgraduate studies at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Since 2001, Benedict Cumberbatch has appeared in numerous stage productions. He gained widespread international recognition with the television series Sherlock, which began in 2010, in which he portrayed the iconic character Sherlock Holmes. Alongside his work in theater, film, and television, he has also been involved in radio drama productions and voice-over work for television. In cinema, he received critical acclaim for voicing the dragon Smaug in the The Hobbit film series.
Between 1999 and 2011, Benedict Cumberbatch was in a long-term relationship with actress Olivia Poulet, whom he met during his university years. Following their separation, he was in a relationship for about one year with painter Anna James.
On 14 February 2015, Benedict Cumberbatch married theater director Sophie Hunter. In the same year, the couple welcomed their son, Christopher Carlton.
