Sydney Sweeney grew up in rural northern Idaho, in the Panhandle region near the Washington border, in a lakeside home where her family had lived for five generations. Active in many sports, she attended middle school at Saint George’s School in Spokane. She completed her high school education at Brighton Hall School in Burbank, California, and briefly attended the University of California, Los Angeles.

Sweeney developed an interest in acting after auditioning as an extra for an independent film shot in the Spokane area. To convince her parents to allow her to pursue acting, she presented them with a five-year business plan. Until moving permanently to Los Angeles at the age of thirteen, she attended auditions and booked commercial work in Seattle and Portland, Oregon, where her family temporarily resided.

Sydney Sweeney began her career with guest appearances on various television shows. She first gained attention in 2018 with her role in the television series Everything Sucks!. She later appeared in The Handmaid's Tale and Sharp Objects. In 2019, she acted in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by Quentin Tarantino.
