Andrew Garfield, born Andrew Russell Garfield on August 20, 1983, in Los Angeles, California, is an American–British actor best known for portraying Spider-Man in the *The Amazing Spider-Man* film series. He is the son of English mother Lynn Garfield and American father Richard Garfield, and he has an older brother named Ben Garfield. When he was three years old, his family moved to England. During his childhood, Garfield practiced gymnastics and later studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama.



Andrew Garfield began taking theater classes at the age of twelve and joined the Young Actors’ Group at his school, where he started performing in plays. In 2004, he played Romeo in *Romeo and Juliet* at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. His performance earned him the Outstanding Newcomer Award at the 2006 Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

In 2005, Andrew Garfield made his first television appearance in Channel 4’s youth drama series Sugar Rush. He gained further attention in 2007 by appearing in two episodes of Doctor Who as Frank. That same year, he starred in Boy A, a performance that won him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor. He also appeared in a small role in The Other Boleyn Girl.

In 2008, Andrew Garfield appeared in The Other Boleyn Girl alongside Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Eric Bana, Jim Sturgess, Mark Rylance, Kristin Scott Thomas, Eddie Redmayne, and Benedict Cumberbatch. In December 2009, he modeled for Vogue. That same year, he acted in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus with Christopher Plummer, Heath Ledger, Tom Waits, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell.

In 2010, Andrew Garfield co-hosted the MTV Video Music Awards with Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake. The same year, he was cast as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man, starring alongside Emma Stone, Sally Field, and Martin Sheen.

Andrew Garfield began a relationship with actress Emma Stone in 2011; the couple separated in 2015. In 2015, he starred in Silence, directed by Martin Scorsese, alongside Liam Neeson and Ken Watanabe. In 2016, he appeared in Hacksaw Ridge, a war film directed by Mel Gibson.
