Jensen Huang is an electrical engineer and the co-founder, president, and chief executive officer of NVIDIA.

Jensen Huang was born on February 17, 1963, in Taipei, Taiwan, as the second son of Huang Hsing-tai and Lo Tsai-hsiu. His father was a chemical engineer, and his mother worked as an elementary school teacher. He completed his undergraduate education in electrical engineering at Oregon State University in 1984 after beginning his studies in 1980. He later earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1992, after starting his graduate studies there in 1990.

Born in Taiwan, Jensen Huang moved with his family to Thailand in 1968 when he was five years old. His father had previously been accepted into a worker training program at the American air-conditioning manufacturer Carrier, which gave him a positive impression of the United States. To prepare her children for a future move, Huang’s mother taught him and his brother ten random English words every day. Due to increasing political instability in Asia, the family sent Huang and his older brother to the United States in 1972 to live with their aunt. Shortly after arriving, his aunt and uncle enrolled him in a boarding school in Kentucky.

At the boarding school, Jensen Huang was required to clean the boys’ restroom every day after classes, while his brother worked on a tobacco farm. During this period, Huang also worked as a waiter at Denny’s. A few years later, his parents relocated to the United States and reunited the family, eventually settling in Oregon.

Jensen Huang graduated from Aloha High School in 1981 at the age of sixteen after skipping two grades. Between 1978 and 1983, he worked continuously, taking his first job at a local Denny’s restaurant, where he served as a busboy and later as a waiter.

Before founding NVIDIA, Jensen Huang moved to Silicon Valley and joined Advanced Micro Devices in 1984. He remained there for about a year before moving to LSI Logic Corporation, where he worked in various roles and eventually became a division manager. While working full-time, he returned to academia and completed his master’s degree in electrical engineering at Stanford University.

In 1993, at the age of 30, Jensen Huang co-founded NVIDIA with microchip designers Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. Since the company’s founding, he has served as its CEO and president. The trio aimed to create graphics processing units (GPUs) for the video game industry. In June 2024, NVIDIA became the world’s most valuable company by market capitalization. Originally founded to solve the PC 3D graphics problem, NVIDIA’s pioneering work in accelerated computing led to the redefinition of modern computer graphics and the creation of modern artificial intelligence.

NVIDIA began with an initial capital of $40,000 but soon secured $20 million in early venture capital funding. With this support, the company survived its challenging early years and ultimately established a strong position in the semiconductor market. NVIDIA went public in 1999. When the company’s stock price reached $100 per share, Jensen Huang had the company’s logo tattooed on his left shoulder.

Under Huang’s leadership, NVIDIA expanded far beyond the gaming industry into artificial intelligence, mobile computing, autonomous vehicle technology, and social networking technologies.

Jensen Huang owns approximately 3% of NVIDIA, which went public in 1999. The company employs more than 32,000 people worldwide.

Jensen Huang married Lori Huang in 1984, whom he met while studying at Oregon State University. The couple has two children, Madison Huang and Spencer Huang.

According to Forbes, Jensen Huang had a net worth of $124.4 billion in 2025.

Jensen Huang donated $30 million to Stanford University to establish an engineering center and, in 2022, donated $50 million to Oregon State University for a research center bearing the same name.

Under Jensen Huang’s leadership, NVIDIA’s GPUs first became dominant in computer gaming and later in artificial intelligence, with the company’s market capitalization surpassing $3 trillion in 2024.

Jensen Huang resides in Los Altos, California, United States.
