Javier Milei
The Radical Libertarian President
Born on October 22, 1970
Age: 56
Profession: Economist, Politician, President
Place of Birth: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Javier Gerardo Milei has been serving as the President of Argentina since December 10, 2023. Known for his radical libertarian ideology, confrontational rhetoric, and unorthodox political style, Milei represents one of the most disruptive figures in contemporary Argentine politics.
Javier Gerardo Milei was born on October 22, 1970, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His mother, Alicia Milei, was a homemaker, while his father, Norberto Milei, worked as a bus driver. He has one sister, Karina Milei, who has played a central role in his personal and political life. Milei completed his secondary education at Cardenal Copello High School.
He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from Belgrano University. He later obtained two master’s degrees, one from the Institute for Economic and Social Development and another from the Torcuato di Tella University, further solidifying his academic foundation in economic theory and policy.
Before entering politics, Milei built a long career as an economist, academic, and author. He wrote numerous books on economics and political economy and worked as a university professor, teaching macroeconomics, economic growth, microeconomics, and mathematics for economists. In the private sector, he served as chief economist at the pension fund company Máxima AFJP, chief economist at the financial consultancy Estudio Broda, and as a government advisor to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes. He also worked as a senior economist at HSBC Argentina.
Throughout his professional career, Milei held chief economist positions in various national and international public institutions. From 2012 onward, he led the Economic Studies Department at the national think tank Fundación Acordar. He was also a member of the B20 and served on the Economic Policy Group of the International Chamber of Commerce, acting as an advisor to the G20. For fifteen years, he worked as chief economist and financial advisor to businessman Eduardo Eurnekian at Corporación América.
Milei formally entered politics in 2021, when he was elected as a National Deputy representing the City of Buenos Aires as part of the Freedom Advances Alliance. His outspoken anti-establishment stance and libertarian economic proposals quickly made him one of the most visible figures in Congress.
On December 10, 2023, following a decisive electoral victory, Javier Gerardo Milei was sworn in as President of Argentina. His presidency marked a sharp ideological shift, emphasizing market liberalization, a reduced role for the state, and aggressive economic reform.
Ideologically, Milei supports individual freedom of choice on issues such as drug use, personal firearm ownership, prostitution, same-sex marriage, sexual orientation, and gender identity. However, he opposes abortion and euthanasia. In foreign policy, he advocates closer relations with the United States, supports Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, and seeks to distance Argentina from geopolitical alignment with China.
Javier Gerardo Milei is unmarried. Prior to his election, he stated that his sister Karina Milei would assume the role traditionally associated with First Lady. He has previously been in a relationship with singer Daniela Mori and, in August 2023, publicly announced a relationship with actress Fátima Flórez.
