Quentin Jerome Tarantino is an American film director, actor, and Academy Award–winning screenwriter, born in 1963. He is widely recognized for his distinctive cinematic style, marked by intense violence, sharp and memorable dialogue, non-linear storytelling, and bold editing techniques. Tarantino has carved out a unique place in world cinema, becoming one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation. Some of his most notable films include Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and the Kill Bill duology.

Born on March 27, 1963, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Tarantino is the son of an Italian-American actor and musician. At the age of 16, he joined the James Best theatre group to pursue acting education. He wrote his first screenplay at the age of 22. In 1984, while working as a cashier in a video rental store, he began to focus seriously on screenwriting, immersing himself in cinema by watching countless films.

In 1993, Tarantino gained significant attention when the screenplay for True Romance, which he had written, was sold and produced. He made his directorial breakthrough in 1992 with Reservoir Dogs, a witty yet brutally violent heist film that immediately established his trademark style. Although Hollywood quickly took notice, Tarantino chose to reject many studio offers, preferring instead to concentrate on his own original projects.

His career reached a major milestone in 1994 when he directed Pulp Fiction, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The film proved that independent cinema could achieve massive box office success and critical acclaim. Its complex narrative structure and sharp dialogue revitalized the career of John Travolta and became a defining work of 1990s cinema.

Following this success, Tarantino directed the fourth segment of the anthology film Four Rooms, a collaborative project with Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, and Robert Rodriguez. His next film, Jackie Brown, was an adaptation of the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard. He then brought to life the long-developing revenge project Kill Bill, conceived during the making of Pulp Fiction together with lead actress Uma Thurman. This film blended Chinese martial arts cinema, Japanese films, Spaghetti Westerns, and Italian horror influences into a single, stylized narrative.

Later, Tarantino appeared as a guest director in Sin City, a film directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Frank Miller. Despite his films being heavily centered on violence, fragmented narratives, pop culture references, and graphic imagery, Tarantino secured his status as one of the most celebrated directors of modern cinema and continues to work on future projects.

Tarantino is also known for his strong opposition to digital filmmaking. He continues to shoot his films on 35mm film and openly expresses his dislike for digital cinema cameras. At the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, he stated that cinema was “dead,” arguing that digital production and projection reduce films to a television-like experience. According to Tarantino, digital files made up of 1s and 0s lack authenticity, and the unique, tactile essence of cinema is lost through digitalization.

On November 28, 2018, Quentin Tarantino married Israeli singer Daniella Pick.
