Michael Soren Madsen was born on September 25, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He was born to a Danish-American father, Calvin Madsen, a retired firefighter, and an Irish-American mother, Elaine Madsen. An American actor of Danish descent, Madsen was also a poet, photographer, producer, director, and screenwriter. He had two older sisters, one of whom is actress Virginia Madsen. Madsen was known to be strongly protective of his sister’s image and openly stated that he did not want her to appear nude in films.
Michael Madsen rose to international prominence with his unforgettable performance as the sadistic criminal Mr. Blonde (Vic Vega) in Reservoir Dogs (1992), directed by Quentin Tarantino. This role cemented his screen persona as a dangerous, charismatic outlaw. Throughout his career, he frequently collaborated with Tarantino and became visually iconic for almost always wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses in his films.
Beyond acting, Madsen was also a published poet. He released three poetry books titled Beer, Blood, and Ashes, Eat the Worm, and Burning in Paradise. His poetry reflected the same raw, melancholic, and rebellious tone that defined his on-screen characters. Over the course of his career, he appeared in more than 170 films, most of them independent productions, and also took part in several short-lived television series.
Among the most memorable films of Michael Madsen are The Doors (1991), Thelma & Louise (1991), The Getaway (1994), Mulholland Falls (1996), Donnie Brasco (1997), Species II (1998), Die Another Day (2002), Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003), Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004), Sin City (2005), Hell Ride (2008), Free Willy (1993), and Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home (1995). He later appeared in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014), completing his long-standing association with stylized crime cinema.
In addition to cinema and poetry, Madsen was also a successful photographer. In 2006, he published his first photography book titled Signs of Life, a collection of images captured during his travels around the world.
On March 9, 2012, Michael Madsen was arrested at his home in Malibu, California, after a violent altercation with his son Christian Madsen. Police found him physically assaulting his 22-year-old son, leading to his arrest with bail set at $100,000.
