Pedro Sánchez was born on February 29, 1972, in Madrid, Spain, into a well-off family as the son of Pedro Sánchez Fernández and Magdalena Pérez-Castejón. His full name is Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón. His father was a senior public administrator who worked for many years at the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music under the Ministry of Culture, and later became the owner of an industrial packaging company. His mother worked as a civil servant in the social security system before later qualifying as a lawyer, graduating from the same university as her son.



Raised in the Tetuán district of Madrid, Pedro Sánchez was educated at Colegio Santa Cristina before transferring to the public high school Instituto Ramiro de Maeztu. During his time there, he played basketball in the Estudiantes youth system, progressing to the under-21 team.

Pedro Sánchez enrolled at the private Camilo José Cela University in Madrid in 1990 and graduated in 1995. In 1993, he joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party. After graduation, he worked for a consulting firm in New York.

In 1998, before beginning his career in local and national politics, Pedro Sánchez worked in Brussels as an assistant to Bárbara Dührkop, a Member of the European Parliament, within the PSOE delegation. He also served on the team of Carlos Westendorp, the United Nations High Representative in Bosnia. After graduating from the Free University of Brussels in 1998 with a degree in Politics and Economics, he obtained a business leadership qualification from the IESE Business School at the University of Navarra. In 2002, he earned an Advanced Studies Diploma in EU Monetary Integration from the Instituto Ortega y Gasset.

Pedro Sánchez began his political career in 2004 as a member of the Madrid City Council. Between May 18, 2004, and September 15, 2009, he served as one of the 57 council members representing the PSOE in Madrid. Alongside his municipal duties, he began working as a lecturer at Universidad Camilo José Cela in 2008, teaching courses on Economic Structure and the History of Economic Thought. In 2009, he was elected to the Congress of Deputies.

In November 2012, Pedro Sánchez obtained a doctorate after submitting a dissertation titled “Economic Innovations in Spanish Diplomacy: An Analysis of the Public Sector.”

On June 12, 2014, Pedro Sánchez announced his candidacy for party leadership and was elected Secretary-General of the PSOE on July 13, 2014, becoming Leader of the Opposition. He led the party in the 2015 and 2016 general elections but resigned shortly after the latter following public disagreements with the party leadership. Eight months later, he won the leadership election again, defeating Susana Díaz and Patxi López.

On June 1, 2018, the PSOE called a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. With the support of Unidas Podemos and several regionalist and nationalist parties, the motion passed successfully. The following day, Pedro Sánchez was sworn in as Prime Minister by King Felipe VI. In the April 2019 general election, he led the PSOE to gain 38 seats, securing its first national victory since 2008. After unsuccessful coalition talks, the PSOE again emerged as the largest party in the November 2019 election. In January 2020, Sánchez formed a minority coalition government with Unidas Podemos, creating Spain’s first national coalition government since the country’s return to democracy.

Pedro Sánchez has served as Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party since June 2017, having previously held the post from 2014 to 2016. He has been Prime Minister of Spain since June 2018. In November 2022, he was elected President of the Socialist International.

Pedro Sánchez speaks Spanish and is fluent in English and French.

Pedro Sánchez married Begoña Gómez in 2006. The couple has two children, Carlota Sánchez Gómez and Ainhoa Sánchez Gómez.
