Orban era ends after 16 years as Peter Magyar secures historic victory
Hungary has entered a new political era after Viktor Orban lost power following 16 years in office. In the April 12, 2026 election, opposition leader Peter Magyar emerged as the clear winner, marking one of the most significant political shifts in the country’s recent history.
The election saw record voter turnout, reflecting strong public engagement and a widespread demand for change. As vote counting continued, Viktor Orban personally called Peter Magyar to concede defeat. Later addressing his supporters, Orban described the result as “clear and painful,” while insisting he would not resign and that his political movement would regroup.
Preliminary results indicate a decisive parliamentary advantage for Magyar’s Tisza Party, which is projected to secure a two-thirds majority—enough to implement constitutional reforms. According to early figures, Tisza won 138 seats, while Orban’s Fidesz party dropped to just 55.
Magyar promises unity, democratic reform, and European alignment
In his victory speech in Budapest, Peter Magyar pledged to “reunite the nation” and govern for all citizens, emphasizing inclusivity and democratic renewal. Addressing a large and enthusiastic crowd, he declared that Hungary had chosen Europe, a statement met with chants of “Europe” from supporters.
Magyar outlined an ambitious reform agenda focused on restoring the rule of law, strengthening judicial independence, and restructuring state institutions. He also promised accountability for corruption, stating that those who had “looted the country” would face consequences. Another key proposal includes limiting the prime minister’s term to two terms (eight years), a move that would effectively prevent Orban from returning to power.
He also extended an invitation to Hungarians who had left the country during Orban’s rule, encouraging them to return and help rebuild a more open and democratic society. Framing the election outcome in emotional terms, Magyar told supporters: “Today, love has won—because love always wins.”
European leaders welcome Hungary’s political shift
The election result was met with widespread approval across Europe, particularly among leaders who have long criticized Hungary’s previous alignment with Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the outcome, stating that “Hungary has chosen Europe.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for closer cooperation to build a “strong and united Europe,” while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez congratulated the Hungarian people on what he described as a “historic election.” French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed support, highlighting Hungary’s renewed commitment to European Union values.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the result as a “historic moment not only for Hungary, but for European democracy,” while Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy signaled readiness to work with the new leadership to promote regional stability and security.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni congratulated Peter Magyar on his victory but also expressed gratitude to Viktor Orban for years of cooperation, reflecting a more balanced response.
Not all reactions were celebratory. Jordan Bardella, leader of France’s far-right National Rally, praised Orban as a “great patriot,” underscoring ideological divisions within Europe regarding Hungary’s political transformation.
The election outcome is widely seen as a turning point that could redefine Hungary’s role within the European Union and reshape its foreign policy direction away from Moscow and back toward Brussels.
