Hayley Atwell gained worldwide recognition for portraying Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role that introduced her to a global audience. In addition to her Marvel work, she has appeared in notable stage, television, and film productions such as A View from the Bridge, The Duchess, The Pillars of the Earth, Winnie the Pooh, and Christopher Robin.

Hayley Elizabeth Atwell was born on April 5, 1982, in London, England, to Grant Atwell and Allison Cain. Her father Grant was American, while her mother Alison was English. After her parents separated when she was two years old, Atwell remained with her mother and was raised in London. She attended Sion-Manning Roman Catholic Girls’ School and later the London Oratory School. When her plans to enroll at Oxford University did not materialize, she spent two years traveling around the world.

In 2002, Atwell was accepted into the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2005 from its acting program. Following several television appearances, she attracted the attention of Woody Allen, who cast her in the 2007 film Cassandra’s Dream, where she appeared alongside Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor.

Atwell achieved mainstream fame through her portrayal of Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She first appeared as the character in Captain America: The First Avenger, later reprising the role in the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter. She also made appearances as Peggy Carter in other Marvel productions, including Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and additional franchise installments.

In 2015, she portrayed Ella’s mother in Kenneth Branagh’s live-action adaptation of Cinderella. In 2023, she appeared opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, sharing the screen with Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Pom Klementieff.

Hayley Atwell is engaged to Ned Wolfgang Kelly.
