Tessa Thompson is an American actress and producer best known for her powerful screen presence and for portraying complex, independent female characters in both film and television. She gained worldwide recognition through her roles in major Hollywood productions as well as critically acclaimed television series.



Tessa Thompson was born on October 3, 1983, in Los Angeles, California. Her father, Marc Anthony Thompson, is of Afro-Panamanian descent, while her mother has Mexican and British Isles ancestry. She spent her early years in Los Angeles before moving to Brooklyn, New York. Thompson attended Santa Monica High School, where she actively participated in numerous theater productions. After graduating, she enrolled at Santa Monica College, where she studied cultural anthropology.

Her acting career began in theater. In 2003, Tessa Thompson performed at the Boston Court Theatre in Pasadena, California, appearing in William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. That same year, her performance as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet earned her a nomination from the NAACP Theatre Awards.

In 2005, Tessa Thompson made her television debut in the CBS series Cold Case. She continued to build her career with a mix of television and film roles. In 2010, she appeared in For Colored Girls, a film that brought together prominent African American actresses and highlighted socially relevant themes.

Between 2012 and 2013, she portrayed key characters in the television series 666 Park Avenue and Copper. Her breakthrough on television came in 2016 when she joined the HBO series Westworld, where she played Charlotte Hale alongside Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, and Jeffrey Wright.

In 2017, Tessa Thompson joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portraying Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. She reprised the role in subsequent Marvel films, including Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder, sharing the screen with Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, and Anthony Hopkins.

She starred opposite Chris Hemsworth in the lead role of Men in Black: International (2019), a continuation of the iconic franchise previously headlined by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. The film also featured Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, and Rebecca Ferguson.

In 2018, Tessa Thompson was nominated for a BAFTA Award in the Rising Star category, further solidifying her status as one of the most prominent actresses of her generation.
