Ed Harris was born on November 28, 1950, in Tenafly, New Jersey, United States. His full name is Edward Allen Harris. His father, Robert L. Harris, was an entertainer and bookstore owner, and his mother was Margaret Harris. He has an older brother named Robert and a younger brother named Spencer. Ed Harris graduated from Tenafly High School in 1969, where he played American football and served as team captain. He later attended Columbia University in New York on a sports scholarship.
In 1971, Ed Harris moved with his family to New Mexico and continued his education at the University of Oklahoma, enrolling in the drama department. During this period, he performed in numerous local theater productions. In 1973, he relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he studied at the California Institute of the Arts, receiving formal training in acting and stage performance.
