Ben Affleck is an American actor, director, and screenwriter.
Born in 1972 in Berkeley, California, Ben Affleck was the first child of a teacher mother and a father who worked at a rehabilitation center. Along with his younger brother Casey Affleck, he developed an interest in acting at an early age. After moving with his family to Boston, he found his first real opportunities in the field of performance.
At the age of eight, Affleck appeared in the PBS biology documentary series The Voyage of the Mimi, where he met Matt Damon for the first time. Damon, who was two grades ahead of him at school, soon became his closest friend. The two spent much of their youth together, roaming the streets and nurturing dreams of a future in acting and filmmaking.
After graduating from the University of Vermont, Affleck set his sights on Hollywood and began his career with television films. He appeared in a small role alongside Matt Damon in School Ties, followed by a part in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. In 1995, he acted in Mallrats, directed by Kevin Smith, marking the beginning of a long-term creative collaboration.
Feeling the absence of a strong project that could truly establish them, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon began writing a screenplay together. Through Affleck’s brother Casey Affleck, they met director Gus Van Sant, who admired their script and helped them take their first major step into a new cinematic world. During this period, Affleck reunited with Kevin Smith in Chasing Amy, portraying a comic book artist who falls in love with a lesbian woman.
The duo’s collaboration with Van Sant culminated in 1997 with Good Will Hunting. The film, centered on a troubled mathematical genius, featured Damon in the lead role and Affleck as his loyal friend. Both actors received widespread acclaim, and the screenplay earned them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, firmly establishing Affleck and Damon among Hollywood’s most powerful new talents.
As one of Hollywood’s most promising young actors, Ben Affleck frequently appeared in the media, particularly due to his relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow. Several films from this era became pivotal in his career, including Shakespeare in Love, the thriller Phantoms, and the big-budget disaster film Armageddon, in which he starred alongside Bruce Willis.
Affleck continued to expand his range with roles such as a gloomy bartender in 200 Cigarettes, an adventurous stableman in Forces of Nature, and a ruthless stockbroker in Boiler Room. He later appeared in Daddy and Them, directed by Billy Bob Thornton, and reunited once again with Kevin Smith and Matt Damon in the controversial film Dogma, where he portrayed a fallen angel.
In 2000, Affleck starred opposite Charlize Theron in the action film Reindeer Games and alongside Gwyneth Paltrow in the romantic comedy Bounce. That same year, he appeared in Pearl Harbor, directed by Michael Bay, sharing the screen with Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale as a World War II pilot.
In 2008, he returned to the big screen with He’s Just Not That Into You, State of Play, and Extract. Around the same period, his films The Company Men and The Town, both in post-production and filming stages, were expected to be released in 2010.
In addition to acting, Ben Affleck pursued directing. He made several short films, including I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meathook, and Now I Have a Three Picture Deal at Disney. His first feature-length directorial effort was Gone Baby Gone, starring his brother Casey Affleck in the leading role.
