Laurence Fishburne is an American film, television, and stage actor best known worldwide for portraying Morpheus in the Matrix film series. His commanding screen presence and authoritative performances have made him one of the most respected actors of his generation.

Laurence John Fishburne III was born on July 30, 1961, in Augusta, Georgia, United States, to Hattie Bell Fishburne and Laurence John Fishburne Jr.. His parents divorced during his childhood, after which he moved with his mother to Brooklyn, New York. At the age of ten, Fishburne began acting on stage in Manhattan and later received formal acting training at the Lincoln Square Academy in New York.

Fishburne made his film debut at a remarkably young age, appearing in Cornbread, Earl and Me (1975). At just 14 years old, he was cast in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic war film Apocalypse Now, where he portrayed Mister Clean, famously lying about his age to secure the role.

Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Fishburne built a reputation for powerful dramatic performances in films such as Boyz n the Hood, King of New York, and Deep Cover. His portrayal of Ike Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It earned widespread acclaim and further established his versatility.

In 1999, Fishburne achieved global stardom by starring opposite Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving in The Matrix, portraying the enigmatic leader Morpheus. He reprised the role in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (2003), cementing his legacy in science fiction cinema.

He continued appearing in major Hollywood productions, including Mission: Impossible III (2006), directed by J.J. Abrams, where he starred alongside Tom Cruise, Michelle Monaghan, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Simon Pegg. Fishburne also portrayed Perry White in Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

In his personal life, Fishburne has been married twice. His first marriage was to Hajna O. Moss in 1985, ending in divorce in 1999. They had two children, Langston Fishburne (born 1987) and Montana Fishburne (born 1991). In 2002, he married actress Gina Torres, with whom he has a daughter, Delilah Fishburne (born 2007). Fishburne resides primarily in Los Angeles, with an additional home in New York.
