Ian McShane is an English film and television actor. He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Drama Series for his performance in Deadwood (2004), a role that firmly established him as one of television’s most commanding and charismatic performers.

Ian David McShane was born on September 29, 1942, in Blackburn, England, the son of former footballer of Jewish descent Harry McShane and Irene Cowley. He was raised in Manchester, where his early exposure to working-class life later influenced the gritty realism of many of his performances.

In his youth, McShane joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where he gained professional acting experience. In 1962, he left the academy after making his film debut in The Wild and the Willing. During this period, he shared accommodation with fellow actor John Hurt, marking the beginning of his immersion in the British acting scene.

McShane continued to build a steady career through film and television, eventually gaining international recognition. In 2002, he appeared in the political drama series The West Wing, portraying the Russian negotiator Nikolai Ivanovich opposite Martin Sheen.

His portrayal of Al Swearengen in Deadwood (2004) became a defining role, earning him the Golden Globe Award and widespread critical acclaim for his raw, poetic, and deeply layered performance.

In 2011, McShane portrayed the legendary pirate Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, acting alongside Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Judi Dench, and Kevin McNally. He continued to appear in high-profile productions, including Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer (2013), where he starred with Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor, and Stanley Tucci.

In 2019, McShane portrayed Professor Broom in Hellboy, sharing the screen with David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, and Daniel Dae Kim. The same year, he reprised his iconic role as Al Swearengen in the television film continuation of Deadwood.

McShane has been married three times. His first marriage was to Suzan Farmer (1965–1968). His second marriage to Ruth Post (1970–1976) resulted in two children, Kate McShane (born 1971) and Morgan McShane (born 1975). On August 30, 1980, he married actress Gwen Humble, with whom he continues to live in Los Angeles.
