Rachel McAdams is a Canadian actress who made history by becoming the first actress to be nominated in five different categories at the MTV Movie Awards in a single year, winning three of those awards. She is internationally known for her roles in romantic dramas, comedies, and major studio films.
Rachel McAdams, born Rachel Anne McAdams, was born on November 17, 1978, in London, Ontario, Canada. Her father, Lance McAdams, worked as a truck driver, while her mother, Sandy McAdams, was a nurse. She has a sister named Kayleen McAdams and a brother named Daniel McAdams. Beginning at the age of four, she trained in figure skating and competed in skating competitions. After completing high school, she graduated from the Theatre Program at York University in Toronto.
Her acting career began with the television series The Famous Jett Jackson, which aired between 1998 and 2001. Although her role was brief, it attracted the attention of several producers. In 2002, she achieved mainstream visibility starring opposite Rob Schneider in the comedy The Hot Chick.
Rachel McAdams experienced her major breakthrough in 2004 with the teen comedy phenomenon Mean Girls, where she portrayed Regina George alongside Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert. The same year, she starred opposite Ryan Gosling in the romantic drama The Notebook, which became a cultural classic. The two actors were romantically involved between 2004 and 2008.
In 2005, she starred with Cillian Murphy in the thriller Red Eye. She continued expanding her range with films such as The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009), opposite Eric Bana, and Sherlock Holmes (2009), where she portrayed Irene Adler alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
In 2010, she appeared in Morning Glory, co-starring with Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Patrick Wilson, and Jeff Goldblum. In 2011, she featured in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, acting alongside Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Michael Sheen, Carla Bruni, and Adrien Brody. During this production, she began a relationship with Michael Sheen, which lasted from 2010 to 2013.
Rachel McAdams starred opposite Channing Tatum in The Vow (2012) and later gained critical acclaim for her work in the HBO series True Detective. In 2016, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her role as Christine Palmer in Doctor Strange, starring alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Mads Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
She resides in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where she lives close to her younger brother Daniel McAdams.
