Jake Gyllenhaal, whose full name is Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal, was born on December 19, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, United States. He has an older sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is also an actress. His father is director Stephen Gyllenhaal, and his mother is screenwriter Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal. His parents divorced in 2009. His godfather is Paul Newman, and his godmother is Jamie Lee Curtis. He graduated from Harvard-Westlake School in 1998 and later attended Columbia University, but he took a break from his studies after two years to focus on his film career.
Gyllenhaal made his acting debut at the age of ten in 1991 with the film City Slickers. In 1999, he landed his first leading role in October Sky. In 2002, he starred alongside Jennifer Aniston in The Good Girl. That same year, he appeared in Moonlight Mile, sharing the screen with Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon.
In 2002, Jake Gyllenhaal married actress Kirsten Dunst, and the couple divorced in 2004.
He gained widespread recognition after starring opposite Dennis Quaid in the climate-disaster film The Day After Tomorrow in 2004. In 2005, he portrayed a U.S. Marine in Jarhead and delivered a critically acclaimed performance as Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain. In the same year, he starred in Proof alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins.
In 2010, he played the lead role in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time opposite Gemma Arterton.
Although his father is Christian and his mother is Jewish, Jake Gyllenhaal practices Buddhism.
In 2015, he appeared in the survival drama Everest alongside Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, and John Hawkes. In 2016, he starred opposite Amy Adams in the psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals.
