Story Overview

With exactly 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds remaining until the end of the world, Donnie Darko introduces a haunting portrait of adolescence suspended between reality and cosmic inevitability. Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a seemingly ordinary American teenager, intelligent and introspective, yet deeply troubled beneath the surface.

Diagnosed with schizophrenia, Donnie struggles to maintain balance between his inner chaos and the structured expectations of suburban life. As he navigates therapy, medication, and family dynamics, he also develops a tentative romantic connection with Gretchen (Jena Malone), a new and equally fragile presence at his school.

Donnie’s waking life appears mostly normal, but his nights tell a different story. A sleepwalker guided by an unseen force, he is led into acts beyond his conscious control. This force manifests as a prophetic and menacing presence, one that claims knowledge of the future and relentlessly draws Donnie toward an inescapable fate.

Gradually, Donnie becomes aware that he has entered a parallel universe where time travel is possible and where strange energy channels extend from the chests of those around him, revealing their predetermined paths. As the countdown approaches zero, the boundaries between time, destiny, and reality dissolve.

In its final moments, Donnie Darko confronts its protagonist with a dimension he never knew existed, forcing a choice that binds sacrifice, love, and cosmic order into a single, devastating conclusion. The film remains a cult landmark, celebrated for its philosophical depth, eerie atmosphere, and enduring ambiguity.
