Drew Barrymore, whose full name is Drew Blyth Barrymore, is an American actress and producer. She is also known for her role as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. Beginning her career at a very young age, Barrymore experienced a turbulent rise and fall in Hollywood but became globally recognized with her role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Particularly well-suited to romantic comedies, she earned widespread praise for films such as Music and Lyrics, in which she starred opposite Hugh Grant. Steven Spielberg is considered her spiritual godfather.

Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975, in Culver City, California, as the daughter of actors John Drew Barrymore and Jaid Barrymore. Her parents divorced shortly after her birth. She has three siblings: John Blyth Barrymore, Blyth Dolores Barrymore, and Brahma Blyth Barrymore (also known as Jessica Blyth Barrymore). Coming from a deeply artistic family, her career began almost in infancy. At just eleven months old, she auditioned for a dog food commercial and, despite being bitten by the dog during the audition, she laughed—an unexpected reaction that secured her first role. At the age of three, she appeared on television in the series Suddenly, Love.

In 1980, she made her first film appearance in Altered States. One year later, she became world-famous through Steven Spielberg’s iconic film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which cemented her status as a child star.

At the age of seven, Barrymore became the youngest host in the history of Saturday Night Live. Her performance in the 1984 film Irreconcilable Differences earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. However, early exposure to fame led her into struggles with substance abuse. She smoked her first cigarette at nine and began using marijuana and cocaine by the age of thirteen. Barrymore later recounted this turbulent period in her 1990 autobiography Little Girl Lost.

Her rebellious public image intensified with her role as a seductive teenager in Poison Ivy, which achieved major commercial success upon its VHS release in 1992. In January 1995, Barrymore posed nude for Playboy, prompting her godfather Steven Spielberg to send her a blanket as a 20th birthday gift with a note reading: “Cover yourself.” Despite criticism, Barrymore continued to embrace provocative roles and became a media sensation after a controversial appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. During this period, she also appeared in advertising campaigns for Guess Jeans.

In 1996, Barrymore signaled a turning point in her career with a brief but memorable role in Scream, directed by Wes Craven, followed by an appearance in Woody Allen’s musical film Everyone Says I Love You. These projects marked the beginning of her professional resurgence.

From the late 1990s onward, Barrymore focused largely on romantic comedies, starring in films such as Wishful Thinking, Best Men, The Wedding Singer, Ever After, Home Fries, Never Been Kissed, and Skipped Parts. These roles helped reshape her public image into that of a charming, approachable, and comedic leading lady.

In 2000, she starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in the blockbuster hit Charlie’s Angels, further solidifying her mainstream success. The same year, she appeared in Skipped Parts, So Love Returns, and the cult classic Donnie Darko.

After a brief engagement to Jamie Walters, Barrymore married comedian Tom Green in July 2001 in a ceremony held in Malibu.

Following her role in Lucky You, released in 2007, Barrymore lent her voice to the documentary South of the Border, which was still in production at the time.
