Cameron Diaz was born on August 30, 1972, in San Diego, California, United States. Her father, Emilio Diaz, worked as a foreman for the California oil company Unocal, while her mother, Billie Early, was an import–export agent. She has an older sister named Chimene Diaz. Her father’s family is of Cuban origin, with ancestors who migrated from Cádiz, Spain, to Cuba. The family later lived for a time in Tampa, Florida, before moving to the Los Angeles area, where Emilio Diaz was born. Her mother is primarily of English and German descent. Cameron Diaz grew up in Long Beach, where she completed both her elementary and high school education.

At the age of just sixteen, Diaz met a photographer at a party who opened the doors of the entertainment world to her. Thanks to this fortunate encounter, she signed with the Elite Model Management agency. She appeared in advertising campaigns for major brands such as Calvin Klein and Levi’s, quickly gaining international recognition. Her successful modeling career took her from France to Japan, and she became a familiar face in commercials for major companies, which eventually led her toward acting.

After a highly successful five-year modeling career, Diaz transitioned into cinema. She made her film debut in 1994 with The Mask, a role that instantly brought her widespread fame and established her as Hollywood’s new blonde sensation.

Following the success of The Mask, she appeared in The Last Supper in 1995. She then starred opposite Keanu Reeves in Feeling Minnesota, portraying a woman who falls in love with her fiancé’s brother. Although the film did not fully deliver the breakthrough she hoped for, Diaz continued her career with roles in She’s the One alongside Edward Burns and Head Above Water with Harvey Keitel. Her performance in Head Above Water earned critical praise and positioned her among the promising stars of the future, after which she chose to focus primarily on commercially oriented films.

Diaz’s major rise came with My Best Friend’s Wedding, where she appeared opposite Julia Roberts. The same year, she starred in A Life Less Ordinary, directed by Danny Boyle, sharing the lead role with Ewan McGregor.

In 1998, after ending her long-term relationship with Carlos de la Torre, Diaz began a three-year romantic relationship with Matt Dillon, whom she co-starred with in There’s Something About Mary. That same year, she shared the lead with Christian Slater in Very Bad Things.

In 1999, she appeared in the controversial and critically acclaimed Being John Malkovich. The same year, she starred in Any Given Sunday, directed by Oliver Stone, alongside Al Pacino, Dennis Quaid, and James Woods, portraying Christina Pagniacci, the owner of the Sharks football team inherited from her father.

In 2000, Diaz gained massive global popularity with the box-office hit Charlie’s Angels, where she played Natalie Cook. In 2001, she appeared in another major production, Vanilla Sky, acting alongside Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz, portraying Julie Gianni, a woman in love with New York publisher David Aames. By this time, Diaz had firmly established herself among Hollywood’s top-tier actresses.

The year 2002 marked a particularly busy period for Diaz. She starred as Jenny Everdeane in Gangs of New York, directed by Martin Scorsese, and as Christina Walters in the romantic comedy The Sweetest Thing. In 2003, she returned once again as Natalie Cook in the sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, which met audience expectations with great success.

On January 5, 2015, Cameron Diaz married guitarist Benji Madden. The couple resides together in Beverly Hills, California.
