Michael Fassbender was born on April 2, 1977, in Heidelberg, Germany, as the son of Adele Fassbender and Josef Fassbender. His mother is Irish and his father is German. At the age of two, he moved with his family to Ireland, where he grew up. He was educated at Fossa National School and St. Brendan’s College in Ireland, while spending his summer holidays in Germany. At the age of nineteen, he moved to London to pursue acting studies and began formal training. In 1999, he left school in order to perform in the play Three Sisters with the Oxford Stage Company.
Fassbender’s first acting role was as Pat in the World War II television series Band of Brothers. In the following years, he appeared in numerous British television productions. His transition to cinema came in 2006 with his role as Stelios in 300. That same year, he starred in François Ozon’s first English-language film Angel. In 2008, he portrayed an imprisoned IRA hunger striker in Hunger, preparing for the role with an extreme diet of 600 calories per day. In 2009, he appeared as a British officer in Quentin Tarantino’s film Inglourious Basterds.
In 2011, Fassbender gained global recognition for his portrayal of Magneto in the superhero film X-Men: First Class. He continued to expand his international profile by appearing in Prometheus (2012) and 12 Years a Slave (2013). His performance in 12 Years a Slave earned him his first Academy Award nomination. In 2014, he reprised his role as Magneto in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
In 2007, he appeared in 300, written by Frank Miller, alongside Gerard Butler and Lena Headey. In 2009, he again collaborated with Quentin Tarantino in Inglourious Basterds, portraying Lieutenant Archie Hicox alongside Brad Pitt, Til Schweiger, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger, Samuel L. Jackson, and Harvey Keitel.
In 2011, he starred in X-Men: First Class together with James McAvoy, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Jennifer Lawrence, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon.
From 2014 onward, Michael Fassbender was in a relationship with actress Alicia Vikander, whom he co-starred with in The Light Between Oceans. The couple separated in September 2015.
