James McAvoy is a Scottish actor best known for his role in Wanted, his portrayal of Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series, and his leading role as Victor Von Frankenstein in Victor Frankenstein. With a career spanning film, television, and theater, McAvoy is regarded as one of the most versatile actors of his generation.



James Andrew McAvoy was born on April 21, 1979, in Glasgow, Scotland, to Elizabeth Johnstone and James McAvoy Sr. When he was seven years old, his father left the family, and McAvoy was raised primarily by his mother. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School.

McAvoy began his acting career at the age of sixteen after actor David Hayman visited his school and offered him a role. He made his screen debut in 1995 with The Near Room. After finishing high school, he enrolled at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD), graduating in 2000. Following his graduation, he moved to London to pursue acting professionally.

His early career included a mix of film and television roles, gradually gaining recognition for his performances. In 2006, McAvoy starred opposite Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland, a role that brought him significant critical attention.

International fame arrived in 2008 when he played Wesley Gibson in the action thriller Wanted, co-starring with Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. His global profile expanded further in 2011 when he was cast as Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class, directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Bryan Singer. He reprised this role across multiple films in the X-Men franchise.

In 2015, McAvoy portrayed Victor Von Frankenstein in Victor Frankenstein, sharing the screen with Daniel Radcliffe. He continued to take on challenging roles, including performances in Split, Glass, and Atomic Blonde.

McAvoy married actress Anne-Marie Duff on November 11, 2006. The couple had a son, Brendan McAvoy (born 2010), before divorcing on May 13, 2016.

In recognition of his rising career, McAvoy received the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2005.
