John Goodman was born on June 20, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, as the son of Virginia Roos and Leslie F. Goodman. His full name is John Stephen Goodman. He completed his early education in his hometown before attending Southwest Missouri State University on a sports scholarship, where he graduated from the Department of Theatre Arts. In 1975, he moved to New York City to pursue an acting career.
While living in New York, Goodman supported himself by working in children’s theatre, performing short shows in restaurants after dinner service, appearing in television commercials, and even working as a nightclub bouncer. He began his theatre career in 1978 with a stage production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 1979, he appeared on Broadway in the play Loose Ends, and in 1985, he performed in the musical Big River, portraying the character Pap, a drunken and volatile father figure.
Between 1988 and 1997, Goodman gained widespread recognition through his portrayal of Dan Conner in the television series Roseanne, a role that made him one of the most recognizable television actors of the era. In 1998, he appeared in the Coen Brothers’ film The Big Lebowski, starring alongside Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and John Turturro.
John Goodman married Annabeth Hartzog on October 27, 1989. The couple has one daughter, Molly Evangeline Goodman, born in 1990. He lives with his family in the United States.
