Although born in Honolulu, his family later moved to Norwalk, Iowa, where he was raised by his mother. In 1989, driven by a longing to reconnect with his Hawaiian roots and continue his education, he returned to Hawaii.
Jason Momoa began his career as a model and achieved early recognition in 1999 when he won Hawaii’s Model of the Year award. He participated in the prestigious Governor’s Fashion Show and walked the runway for Louis Vuitton Hawaii. In the same year, he hosted the Miss Teen Hawaii USA competition. He attended Colorado State University but returned to Hawaii before graduating.
Naturally athletic, Jason Momoa enjoys ice climbing, mountain biking, skiing, longboard skateboarding, and hockey. He also has a deep appreciation for art, culture, and spirituality. He worked with pastels in Paris and, in 1999, traveled to Tibet, where he deepened his spiritual knowledge through Buddhist teachings.

In 2010, Jason Momoa starred in the lead role of Conan the Barbarian. A year later, in 2011, he achieved international fame with his role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, appearing alongside actors such as Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, and Aidan Gillen.
Jason Momoa married actress Lisa Bonet on November 15, 2007. The couple has two children, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa and Lola Iolani Momoa. They divorced in 2022.
In 2016, Jason Momoa appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, sharing the screen with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, and Jesse Eisenberg. His portrayal of Aquaman continued with the release of Aquaman in 2018, directed by James Wan, in which he starred opposite Amber Heard.
