Kate Winslet, born Kate Elizabeth Winslet, is an English film actress who gained worldwide recognition for her role as Rose DeWitt Bukater in the box-office phenomenon Titanic, regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. She is one of the youngest actresses to receive multiple Academy Award nominations and has been nominated for the Golden Globe Awards numerous times throughout her career.



Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975, in Reading, Berkshire, England. Her father, Roger Winslet, and mother, Sally Bridges, were both actors. Her maternal grandparents, Linda Bridges and Oliver Bridges, were also involved in acting, as are her sisters Beth Winslet and Anna Winslet. She began formal acting training at the age of eleven at the Redroofs Theatre School.

After graduating in 1991, she appeared in television commercials and stage adaptations such as Adrian Mole and Peter Pan. She soon secured long-term roles in the BBC television series Dark Season and Get Back. Following performances in the television film Anglo-Saxon Attitudes (1992) and the series Casualty (1993), she made her feature film debut at the age of seventeen.

Her breakthrough came with Heavenly Creatures, directed by Peter Jackson in 1994, in which she portrayed Juliet Hulme. The performance earned her the New Zealand Film and Television Award for Best Actress and established her as a major emerging talent.

In 1995, Kate Winslet starred in Sense and Sensibility, directed by Ang Lee, alongside Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. The role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The following year, she portrayed Ophelia in Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Hamlet, and Sue Bridehead in Jude.

In 1997, she achieved global stardom starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron’s epic romance Titanic. Her performance as Rose DeWitt Bukater earned her a second Academy Award nomination and propelled her to international fame.

She continued this trajectory with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Michel Gondry, where she co-starred with Jim Carrey. She also showcased her musical abilities, singing in several films and releasing the single What If, which entered the UK Top 10.

In 2008, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Hanna Schmitz in The Reader. Reilly.

Her later career includes roles in the Divergent film series, Steve Jobs, and the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, for which she won an Emmy Award. In 2015, her portrayal of Joanna Hoffman in Steve Jobs earned her a seventh Academy Award nomination, as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards.

Kate Winslet has been married three times. Her first marriage was to Jim Threapleton (1998–2001), with whom she has a daughter, Mia Honey Threapleton. She later married Sam Mendes (2003–2010), and they have a son, Joe Alfie Mendes. In 2012, she married Edward Abel Smith, and they have a son, Bear Blaze Winslet.

Beyond cinema, she has appeared in advertising campaigns for brands such as American Express and Lancôme, becoming the face of the Trésor perfume line in 2007.
