Cillian Murphy was born on 25 May 1976 in Douglas, County Cork, Ireland. He was raised in an academic family; his mother worked as a French teacher and his father was a school inspector. After completing high school, he enrolled at University College Cork in 1996 to study law, but after one year he realized that the field was not suitable for him and decided to pursue acting instead.

In 2002, Cillian Murphy gained international attention with his role in 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle. In the film, he shared leading roles with Naomie Harris, Megan Burns, Brendan Gleeson, and Christopher Eccleston. The success of the film established him as a prominent rising actor.

In 2003, he appeared in Girl with a Pearl Earring, acting alongside Colin Firth, who portrayed the Dutch painter Jan Vermeer, and Scarlett Johansson. His performance further strengthened his presence in international cinema.

In 2023, Cillian Murphy starred in Oppenheimer, written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film focuses on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who led the Manhattan Project. Murphy played the leading role of Oppenheimer, while Emily Blunt portrayed his wife Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. The cast also included Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Gary Oldman as Harry S. Truman, and Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock.
