Christopher Nolan was born on July 30, 1970, in London. He is an English screenwriter, producer, and director who has built a portfolio of films that have achieved both major box-office success and critical acclaim. Among his most notable works are Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Inception.

The son of an English father who worked as an advertising copywriter and an American mother who was a flight attendant, Christopher Nolan spent his childhood years between London and Chicago. He completed his secondary education in Hertfordshire, England, at Haileybury and Imperial Service College. He later earned his undergraduate degree in English Literature from University College London. During his university years, he was actively involved in the school’s film club, where he had the opportunity to direct several short films.

In the early 1990s, Christopher Nolan worked as a cameraman on African aid projects led by photojournalist Dan Eldon. This experience continued until Eldon’s death in Somalia in 1993.

In 1997, he married film producer Emma Thomas, with whom he would later have four children. In 1998, Nolan directed his first feature film, Following, a low-budget production costing only $6,000, which told the story of a writer who follows random strangers. After the film received positive attention, he signed an agreement with Newmarket Films and completed Memento in 2000. Starring Guy Pearce, the film later became a cult classic and earned major recognition, including awards at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards for Best Screenplay.

In 2002, Christopher Nolan directed a new adaptation of the Norwegian film Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams. In 2005, he brought a fresh and darker perspective to one of his childhood heroes with Batman Begins. Starring Christian Bale, the film stood apart from previous Batman adaptations and clearly transcended the boundaries of a conventional superhero movie.

He followed this success with The Prestige in 2006 and then with The Dark Knight in 2008, the sequel to Batman Begins. The Dark Knight won two Academy Awards, achieved extraordinary box-office success, and remained at the top of the IMDb Top 250 list for a long time.

In 2010, Christopher Nolan released Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The film quickly climbed to third place on the IMDb Top 250 list in its first week and grossed more than $60 million.

Married since 1997 to Emma Thomas, Nolan is the father of four children: Magnus Nolan, Rory Nolan, Flora Nolan, and Oliver Nolan. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

In 2012, he completed the final installment of the Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, which surpassed the $1 billion mark at the box office and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time. In the fall of 2014, he released the science-fiction epic Interstellar, starring Matthew Mcconaughey and Anne Hathaway. In 2017, his World War II film Dunkirk was released.

Known for his distance from modern technology, Christopher Nolan reportedly does not use email or own a mobile phone. In his films, his wife frequently serves as producer, while his brother often collaborates with him as a screenwriter. For film scores, he has repeatedly worked with composer Hans Zimmer. He is also known for frequently casting actors he trusts, most notably Christian Bale and Michael Caine, whom he has worked with on many projects.
