Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Her father, Gerald Hathaway, is a lawyer, and her mother, Kate McCauley, is an actress. Raised as a devout Catholic, Hathaway later described herself as a non-denominational Christian after learning that her brother was gay, stating that she did not wish to belong to a church that opposed people’s sexual orientations.
From childhood, Hathaway initially dreamed of becoming a nurse, but after abandoning this ambition, she turned toward the world of cinema and theater. While studying at Millburn High School, she appeared in numerous stage productions. During her high school years, her performance in the play Once Upon a Mattress earned her a nomination as Best High School Actress in the Rising Star category at the Paper Mill Playhouse Awards.
After studying women’s studies for a period at Vassar College, Hathaway transferred to New York University. During her time there, she also trained at the Barrow Group Theater Company. She experienced her first television role in 1999 with the short-lived series Get Real. In 2001, she starred in her first leading film role in The Princess Diaries, and in the same year appeared in The Other Side of Heaven. She continued with supporting roles in 2002, including Nicholas Nickleby.
Between 1999 and 2005, Hathaway predominantly appeared in family-oriented and children’s films. After this period, she announced her intention to pursue more serious and mature roles. In 2005, she voiced Little Red Riding Hood in the animated film Hoodwinked!. The same year, she appeared in Havoc, directed by Barbara Kopple, which explored the lives of wealthy Californian youths, and in Brokeback Mountain, a film depicting a romantic relationship between two men in the American West between 1963 and 1981.
Hathaway closed 2006 with The Devil Wears Prada and followed it in 2007 with Becoming Jane. In 2008, she appeared in Becoming Jane, Get Smart, Passengers, and Rachel Getting Married. The drama Rachel Getting Married, directed by Jonathan Demme, earned Hathaway nominations for the Academy Awards and many other prestigious ceremonies. For this film, she won a total of eight awards, including the Prism Award and the Southeastern Film Critics Association Award.
In 2009, Hathaway starred in the romantic comedy Bride Wars, which achieved strong box office success despite mixed critical reviews. In 2010, she appeared in Valentine's Day and Alice in Wonderland, and also contributed as a voice actress in several episodes of the popular animated television series Family Guy. In Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton, she portrayed the White Queen alongside Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Mia Wasikowska, receiving high praise from critics for her performance.
On December 11, 2010, in Oslo, Norway, Anne Jacqueline Hathaway co-hosted the “Nobel Peace Prize Concert” together with Denzel Washington.
She was later nominated for major awards such as the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes for her performance in Rachel Getting Married. For the film adaptation of Les Misérables, Hathaway portrayed the single mother Fantine. To make her role more convincing, it was reported that she followed a strict 500-calorie-per-day diet.
Anne Jacqueline Hathaway became engaged to actor Adam Shulman in November 2011, and the couple married on September 29, 2012. They have two children: Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman (born March 24, 2016) and Jack Shulman (born November 2019).
