Timothy Francis Robbins is an Academy Award–winning American actor, director, producer, writer, and musician. Known for his intellectual depth, political activism, and emotionally layered performances, Robbins has built a career spanning theatre, independent cinema, and major Hollywood productions.

Timothy Francis Robbins was born on 16 October 1958 in West Covina, California, into a liberal, Irish-American Catholic family. He has stated that growing up in a religious and conservative environment had a positive influence on his character. His father, Gil Robbins, was a member of the folk music group The Highwaymen, while his mother, Mary Robbins, worked as a publishing executive. His sisters, Gabrielle Robbins and Adele Robbins, became actresses, and his brother David Robbins is a composer.

While still very young, Robbins moved with his family to Greenwich Village, New York, the neighborhood in which he grew up. Reflecting on his upbringing there, Robbins once said: “I grew up in New York. No matter what happens, you learn to be honest and not talk behind people’s backs. So I tell people, ‘If you have something to say to me, say it to my face. Then we either talk about it—or we fight.’”

During his years at Stuyvesant High School in New York, Timothy Francis Robbins joined the drama club, which marked the beginning of his commitment to acting. He later attended the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and graduated from the theatre department of the University of California, Los Angeles. He studied acting with Georges Bigot at Théâtre du Soleil and, after graduating, joined the experimental theatre group The Actors’ Gang in Los Angeles in 1981, founded with former college friends.

While working with The Actors’ Gang, Robbins appeared in small film roles, including Fraternity Vacation (1985). During his university years, he supported himself through various jobs, from pizza delivery to waiting tables. He once described this period by saying, “When you’re delivering pizza, you can’t really afford to be too selective about the roles you’re offered.”

Timothy Francis Robbins gained wider recognition after starring alongside Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon in the baseball comedy Bull Durham (1988). His international fame solidified when he starred opposite Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption (1994), adapted from a short story by Stephen King, a film that later became one of the most acclaimed movies in cinema history.

Alongside his acting career, Robbins also distinguished himself as a director and screenwriter. He wrote and directed Bob Roberts (1992), followed by the politically charged film Dead Man Walking (1995), and later the musical drama Cradle Will Rock (1999). Robbins continued to rise as an actor with major performances in Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River, Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, and Jon Favreau’s Zathura: A Space Adventure. Robbins married actress Susan Sarandon, whom he met during the filming of Bull Durham. The couple lived in New York and had two sons: Jack Henry Robbins (born 1989) and Miles Guthrie Robbins (born 1992). Known for their strong liberal political views, both Robbins and Sarandon have openly opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq and globalization policies.

A former high school hockey player who was expelled from his team after a fight, Timothy Francis Robbins later became a passionate supporter of the New York Rangers hockey team. In baseball, he is an avid fan of the New York Mets.
