Cate Blanchett is an Australian actress best known for portraying Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, as well as the Elven Queen Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. She is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and accomplished actresses of her generation.
Cate Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969, in Ivanhoe, Melbourne, Australia. Her full name is Catherine Élise Blanchett. Her mother, June Blanchett, was a teacher, and her father, Robert Blanchett, was an advertising executive. When Blanchett was only ten years old, her father died of a heart attack. She has a brother, Bob Blanchett, who is a computer engineer, and a sister, Genevieve Blanchett, who works as a stage and costume designer.
Cate Blanchett graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1992. Her first major theatrical success came in 1993 when she appeared opposite Geoffrey Rush in David Mamet’s play Oleanna, portraying the character Carol. Between 1994 and 1995, she played Ophelia in Hamlet, directed by Neil Armfield and produced by Company B, sharing the stage with Rush and Richard Roxburgh.
Her first significant film role came in 1997 with Paradise Road, directed by Bruce Beresford, in which she starred alongside Glenn Close and Frances McDormand. The same year, she won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Supporting Actress for Thank God He Met Lizzie. In 1998, Blanchett starred opposite Ralph Fiennes in Oscar and Lucinda, earning a nomination for the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actress.
One of Cate Blanchett’s most iconic roles came in 1998 when she portrayed Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth. The performance earned her her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Although she lost the Oscar to Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love, Blanchett won both the BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress for the role.
In 2001, Blanchett appeared as Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, reprising the role in The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003). Her portrayal of the Elven Queen became one of the most iconic characters in modern fantasy cinema.
In 2004, Cate Blanchett portrayed Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator, directed by Martin Scorsese, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2007, she received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her portrayal of Bob Dylan in I'm Not There. With this role, she became the second actor in history—after Linda Hunt—to receive an Academy Award nomination for portraying a character of the opposite gender.
In 2008, Blanchett starred as Soviet agent Irina Spalko in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, directed by Steven Spielberg. The same year, she co-starred with Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, directed by David Fincher.
Cate Blanchett won her second Academy Award in 2014 for Best Actress for her performance as Jasmine in Blue Jasmine, directed by Woody Allen. That same year, she returned as Galadriel in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, directed by Peter Jackson, alongside Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, and Evangeline Lilly.
In 2017, Blanchett portrayed the villain Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, acting alongside Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Jeff Goldblum, and Idris Elba.
Cate Blanchett married screenwriter Andrew Upton on December 29, 1997. The couple has three sons: Dashiell John Upton (born 2001), Roman Robert Upton (born 2004), and Ignatius Martin Upton (born 2008). In March 2015, they adopted a daughter named Vivienne Upton.
