Cate Blanchett is an Australian actress best known for portraying Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, as well as the Elven Queen Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. She is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and accomplished actresses of her generation.

Cate Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969, in Ivanhoe, Melbourne, Australia. Her full name is Catherine Élise Blanchett. Her mother, June Blanchett, was a teacher, and her father, Robert Blanchett, was an advertising executive. When Blanchett was only ten years old, her father died of a heart attack. She has a brother, Bob Blanchett, who is a computer engineer, and a sister, Genevieve Blanchett, who works as a stage and costume designer.

Cate Blanchett graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1992. Her first major theatrical success came in 1993 when she appeared opposite Geoffrey Rush in David Mamet’s play Oleanna, portraying the character Carol. Cate Blanchett married screenwriter Andrew Upton on December 29, 1997. The couple has three sons: Dashiell John Upton (born 2001), Roman Robert Upton (born 2004), and Ignatius Martin Upton (born 2008). In March 2015, they adopted a daughter named Vivienne Upton.
