Martin Freeman, born Martin John C. Freeman, is an English actor widely recognized for his performances in both television series and feature films. He is best known for portraying Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit film trilogy and Tim Canterbury in the British television series The Office.



Martin Freeman was born on September 8, 1971, in Aldershot, Hampshire, England. He attended Cardinal Newman School for his early education, followed by Salesian School in Surrey. He later completed his professional acting training at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

Freeman has appeared extensively in theatre productions and numerous radio dramas, alongside his work in cinema and television. He gained widespread recognition for his role as Tim Canterbury in The Office, which established him as one of Britain’s most distinctive comic actors. In addition to comedic roles, he has also taken on serious dramatic performances, including his portrayal of Lord Shaftesbury in the BBC historical drama Charles II: The Power and The Passion.

He appeared in Ali G Indahouse (2002), written by Sacha Baron Cohen, and in Love Actually (2003), directed by Richard Curtis. These performances further expanded his international visibility. Freeman continued to balance comedy and drama with ease, earning critical acclaim across genres.

Martin Freeman married actress Amanda Abbington in 2000. The couple has two children, Joe Freeman and Grace Freeman.
