Guillermo del Toro (full name: Guillermo del Toro Gómez) is a Mexican filmmaker internationally recognized for his distinctive visual imagination, gothic sensibility, and deep engagement with fantasy, horror, and myth. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential auteurs of contemporary cinema, blending dark fairy tales with emotional and political subtext.

During his high school years, Guillermo del Toro began making short films and later attended the Centro de Investigación y Estudios Cinematográficos. In the mid-1980s, he founded Necropia, a company providing services to the Mexican film market. Before fully committing to directing, he spent nearly ten years working professionally in makeup and special effects design, a background that profoundly shaped his tactile and creature-driven cinematic style.

He completed his first film production in 1986 at the age of 21. In 1993, he made his feature-length directorial debut with Cronos, marking the beginning of a career defined by originality and visual boldness. As his career progressed, he also established his own production company, The Tequila Gang, through which he supported both his own projects and those of emerging filmmakers.

In 1998, following the kidnapping of his father in Mexico and the payment of a substantial ransom, Guillermo del Toro decided to relocate with his family and continue his life abroad. This event significantly impacted his personal life and reinforced his decision to pursue an international filmmaking career.

In 2002, he directed Blade II, starring Wesley Snipes, Ron Perlman, Kris Kristofferson, and Norman Reedus. He followed this with Hellboy (2004), which he both wrote and directed, casting Ron Perlman in the lead role. These films established his reputation for merging comic-book storytelling with horror aesthetics.

Guillermo del Toro reached a major artistic peak in 2006 with Pan's Labyrinth, a dark fantasy film that achieved worldwide acclaim and grossed over $80 million globally. The film became one of the best-selling foreign-language films in the United States and is considered a landmark work in modern fantasy cinema.

In 2013, he directed the science-fiction epic Pacific Rim, featuring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman. The film showcased his passion for large-scale world-building and practical creature design.

In 2017, Guillermo del Toro released the fantasy-drama The Shape of Water, which won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 74th Venice Film Festival. The film went on to earn him the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Director, solidifying his status as one of the most celebrated directors of his generation.

Guillermo del Toro married Lorenza Newton in 1986. The couple has two daughters, Mariana and Marisa. He lives with his family in California, United States.
