Story Overview

Serving as the direct continuation of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug follows Thorin Oakenshield and his company after their perilous crossing of the Misty Mountains, as their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain grows increasingly dangerous and morally complex.

Forced to traverse the dark and treacherous realm of Mirkwood without the guidance of Gandalf, the group faces unseen threats that test both their unity and their resolve. As the forest tightens its grip, survival depends not on strength alone, but on trust, wit, and endurance.

Their journey eventually leads them to the human settlement of Lake-town, where political tension and personal motives complicate the already fragile alliance between Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves. With their agreement nearing its end, Bilbo is confronted with difficult choices that challenge his sense of loyalty and courage.

As the shadow of the Lonely Mountain looms ever closer, the company must uncover the secret entrance to the dragon Smaug’s lair. Meanwhile, Gandalf’s unexplained absence and his pursuit of a mysterious mission to the south raise ominous questions, hinting at a far greater darkness threatening Middle-earth beyond the scope of this single quest.
