Stephen Miller (born August 23, 1985) is an American political advisor best known for his influence on immigration and homeland security policy in the United States. Since January 20, 2025, he has served in the White House as Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and as United States Homeland Security Advisor. He previously held prominent roles during the first administration of Donald Trump, serving from 2017 to 2021 as Senior Advisor to the President and Director of White House Speechwriting.

Stephen Miller is widely regarded as one of the most influential ideologues behind Trumpism and the policy agenda of the Trump administrations. His political views have frequently been described as far-right, anti-immigration, and aligned with white nationalist thought. He played a central role in shaping the family separation policy at the U.S. border and in drafting Executive Order 13769, which imposed travel restrictions on several Muslim-majority countries. As Director of Speechwriting, he oversaw the drafting of Donald Trump’s inaugural address and multiple State of the Union speeches.

Stephen Miller grew up in Santa Monica, California, and studied political science at Duke University. During his university years, he wrote opinion columns for the student newspaper *The Chronicle* and served as president of Duke’s chapter of Students for Academic Freedom. He became known for his confrontational rhetoric, opposition to multiculturalism, and conservative activism. During this period, he was strongly influenced by conservative writer David Horowitz.

After graduating in 2007, Stephen Miller worked as a press secretary for members of the U.S. House of Representatives, including Michele Bachmann and John Shadegg. In 2009, he joined the staff of Jeff Sessions, where he focused extensively on immigration policy. He became one of the leading strategists opposing the 2013 Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act and played a key role in hardening congressional resistance to immigration reform.

Stephen Miller joined Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign as a senior policy advisor. During the campaign, he shaped Trump’s immigration platform and wrote Trump’s Republican National Convention acceptance speech as well as the presidential inauguration address. While serving in the White House, his uncompromising stance on immigration frequently led to conflicts with cabinet members and senior officials.

During the first Trump administration, Stephen Miller strongly advocated for drastic reductions in refugee admissions, the termination of the DACA program, stricter asylum standards, and the militarization of border enforcement. He consistently promoted the aggressive use of executive authority, helping to implement policies that bypassed the legislative branch.

Following Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election, Stephen Miller remained closely aligned with Trump and supported challenges to the election results. In April 2021, he founded America First Legal, a conservative legal advocacy organization aimed at continuing Trump-era policies through litigation. The organization quickly became one of the primary legal vehicles for advancing Trump-aligned political objectives.

Between 2021 and 2025, Stephen Miller was repeatedly summoned by congressional committees investigating the January 6 Capitol attack and the 2020 election. He was compelled by court orders to testify, with particular scrutiny placed on his role in preparing Trump’s speeches in the period leading up to January 6.

After Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, Stephen Miller returned to the White House in an even more powerful position. From 2025 onward, he became one of the principal architects of aggressive immigration policies, including mass deportations, accelerated removal procedures, expanded detention facilities, and extensive use of emergency powers. He is widely reported to wield significant influence over the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security.

In his personal life, Stephen Miller married Katie Waldman in 2020. The couple has three children. Despite his controversial public image and rigid ideological stance, Stephen Miller continues to be regarded as one of the most powerful unelected figures in contemporary United States politics.
