Natalie Portman, whose birth name is Natali Hershlag, was born on June 9, 1981, in Jerusalem, Israel, as the only child of her family. Her father comes from a Jewish family that emigrated from Poland and Romania, while her mother’s family has Jewish roots in Austria and Russia. Her father is a physician specializing in endocrinology. In 1984, when Natalie was three years old, her family moved to Washington, D.C., in the United States, and later, in 1990, settled in New York.

Natalie Portman completed high school in 1999 at Syosset High School in New York. She continued her education at Harvard University, majoring in psychology, and graduated in 2003. She later pursued graduate studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From middle school onward, she regularly attended theater camps during summer vacations. In addition to her academic pursuits, she had been taking dance lessons since the age of four.

Her entry into cinema came through modeling. At the age of twelve, Natalie Portman began working as a child model, and at fourteen she achieved worldwide recognition with her role opposite Jean Reno in Léon: The Professional (1994), directed by Luc Besson. Her career accelerated further when she portrayed Queen Amidala/Padmé Naberrie in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, a role that brought her global fame.

In the spring of 2004, Natalie Portman returned to Israel to attend courses at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In March 2006, she served as a visiting lecturer at Columbia University, teaching classes on terrorism and counterterrorism. Fluent in Hebrew and English, she also speaks French, German, Spanish, and Japanese, and has been studying Arabic.

Her performance in Closer (2004) earned Natalie Portman an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and she won the Golden Globe Award in the same category. In 2011, she received universal acclaim for her role as Nina in Black Swan, for which she won the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and BAFTA Award for Best Actress.

In 2005, prior to the premiere of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Natalie Portman shaved her head for her role in V for Vendetta, an act that attracted significant media attention. She subsequently appeared in Goya’s Ghosts, further expanding the range of her performances.

During the production of Black Swan, Natalie Portman met French dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied. The couple married on August 4, 2012. They have two children: a son, Aleph Millepied (born June 2011), and a daughter, Amalia Millepied (born 2017).
