Profession: Actor
Place of Birth: Casablanca, Morocco
Jean Reno was born on July 30, 1948, in Casablanca, Morocco. His real name is Don Juan Moreno y Herrera-Jiménez. He is a French actor of Spanish origin, internationally acclaimed for his ability to move seamlessly between European auteur cinema and major Hollywood productions.
Jean Reno was born to Spanish parents who fled Spain to escape the repression of dictator Francisco Franco. The family settled in Morocco, where Reno spent his childhood. His passion for cinema began at an early age, as he spent countless hours watching films starring John Wayne, William Holden, Marlon Brando, Jean Gabin, and Louis Jouvet, or escaping the heat of the city by swimming along the Moroccan coast.
He received formal theatre training in Casablanca. During his youth, his mother passed away. He has a sister named Maria Teresa (“Maite”). In 1967, due to civil unrest in Morocco, Jean Reno left the country and moved to France, where he later became a French citizen. He continued his acting education at the Cours Simon Drama School in Paris. He completed his military service in France, a process made easier by his prior theatrical training.
Throughout the 1970s, Jean Reno focused primarily on theatre and television. He made his feature film debut in 1979 in Clair de Femme, directed by Costa-Gavras. Soon after, he joined Didier Flamand’s theatre company and toured extensively across Europe, further refining his craft on stage.
His breakthrough in French cinema came in 1993 with Les Visiteurs, which became a major box-office success in France and established him as a leading actor. International recognition soon followed.
Jean Reno achieved worldwide fame with his performance in Léon: The Professional, released internationally on November 18, 1994. The film marked his definitive breakthrough in Hollywood and remains one of the most iconic roles of his career.
Following this success, he appeared in large-scale international productions, including Mission: Impossible, directed by Brian De Palma and starring Tom Cruise, and Ronin, directed by John Frankenheimer, in which he starred alongside Robert De Niro. These collaborations firmly positioned him as a key figure in global cinema.
Jean Reno has been married three times. His first marriage was to Geneviève in 1977, with whom he has two children: Sandra (born 1978) and Mickael (born 1980). In 1996, he married Polish model Nathalie Dyszkiewicz, and they had two children: Tom (born 1996) and Serena (born 1998). On July 29, 2006, he married Polish model and actress Zofia Borucka. They have two children together: Cielo (born July 2009 in New York) and Dean (born September 2011).
Jean Reno lives primarily in Paris with his wife and younger children, while also maintaining a residence in Los Angeles.
He has been nominated three times for the César Awards: Best Supporting Actor in 1989 for The Big Blue, Best Actor in 1994 for Les Visiteurs, and Best Actor in 1995 for Léon: The Professional.
