Story Overview

The Big Blue follows the lifelong bond and rivalry between Enzo (Jean Reno) and Jacques (Jean-Marc Barr), two men who grow up together along the Mediterranean coast, united by an intense passion for free diving. Though they share the same obsession, their motivations differ profoundly. Jacques dives as if drawn by an almost mystical connection to the sea, while Enzo is driven by ambition, adrenaline, and the pursuit of glory.

Years later, the two reunite as world-class free divers, finding themselves competing head-to-head for the world championship. What begins as a test of skill and endurance soon turns into a dangerous confrontation with the limits of the human body, where each descent carries the risk of never returning to the surface.

Witnessing this perilous rivalry is Johanna (Rosanna Arquette), a young woman deeply in love with Jacques. As she becomes emotionally entangled in their competition, the film gradually transforms from a sports drama into a poetic meditation on obsession, love, and humanity’s fragile relationship with nature.
