Early Life and Education
Andy Serkis was born on April 20, 1964, in Ruislip, west London. His mother, Lylie Weech, was a teacher who worked with children with disabilities. His father, Clement Serkis, was a gynecologist of Armenian descent who was born in Iraq. The family's original Armenian surname was Serkissian.
Serkis grew up with three sisters and one brother. During his childhood, he spent time in both London and Baghdad, where his father worked as a doctor and helped establish a hospital. His family also traveled regularly to the Middle East.
He attended St Benedict's School in London and later enrolled at Lancaster University to study visual arts.
Initially interested in painting and theatrical set design, he chose theater studies as a subsidiary subject. While at university, he participated in student productions and worked at the student radio station Bailrigg FM.
His performance in Gotcha, a play by Barrie Keeffe, encouraged him to pursue acting professionally.
Theater and Early Acting Career
After graduating from Lancaster University in 1985, Andy Serkis began working in theater. He performed at the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster and later appeared in productions at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester.
He continued performing on stage throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, developing experience in classical and contemporary drama.
His early television roles included appearances in The New Statesman, The Darling Buds of May, and The Bill.
During the 1990s, he also appeared in films including Prince of Jutland (1994), Career Girls (1997), directed by Mike Leigh, and Among Giants (1998).

He appeared in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003).
Gollum was created using computer-generated imagery based on Serkis's voice, facial expressions, and physical movements. The performance required him to act alongside other cast members while providing movement and expression data for digital animation.
The trilogy starred Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, and Sean Astin.
Serkis returned to the role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012). He also worked as a second-unit director on the three Hobbit films, including The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).

The film starred Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, and Jack Black.
Serkis subsequently became involved in developing performance-capture techniques for film production. In 2011, he co-founded The Imaginarium Studios with producer Jonathan Cavendish. The London-based company specializes in performance capture, visual effects, and film production.
Planet of the Apes and Caesar
In 2011, Andy Serkis portrayed Caesar, a genetically enhanced chimpanzee, in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Rupert Wyatt. The film starred James Franco, Freida Pinto, and John Lithgow.

He portrayed the character for a third time in War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), appearing opposite Woody Harrelson.
Across the three films, Caesar develops from a young chimpanzee raised among humans into the leader of a community of intelligent apes.
Serkis performed the character's physical movements and expressions using performance-capture technology, with visual effects artists creating the final digital appearance.
