Early Life and Education

Lilly Wachowski was born on December 29, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois, into an American family of Polish ancestry. Her mother, Lynne Wachowski, worked as a nurse and painter, while her father, Ron Wachowski, was a businessman.

She attended Kellogg Elementary School in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood and later studied at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, which offered programs in performing arts and science.

After completing high school, Lilly enrolled at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Her older sister Lana attended Bard College in New York. Both left university before graduating.

During their youth, the sisters developed an interest in comic books, science fiction, philosophy, and fantasy literature, including the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien. These interests later became part of their approach to filmmaking.

Early Career and Comic Book Writing

After leaving university, Lilly Wachowski and her sister Lana worked in carpentry and construction in Chicago while developing screenplays and comic book projects.

In the early 1990s, they began writing for the comics industry. Their work included issues of Ectokid, a series created by horror writer Clive Barker and published through Marvel Comics.

They also contributed to comic book adaptations associated with Barker's Hellraiser and Nightbreed franchises.

In 1995, the Wachowskis received their first major Hollywood screenwriting credit for Assassins, directed by Richard Donner and starring Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, and Julianne Moore.

The screenplay underwent revisions by other writers before production, and the finished film differed from the Wachowskis' original script.

Directorial Debut with Bound

In 1996, Lilly Wachowski and Lana Wachowski made their feature-film directing debut with Bound, a neo-noir crime thriller.

The film starred Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon, and Joe Pantoliano. It follows two women who become romantically involved and plan to steal money from a criminal organization.

The sisters wrote and directed the film, which received several awards and nominations at international film festivals.

Bound established their working relationship with cinematographer Bill Pope, who later collaborated with them on The Matrix.

The Matrix and International Recognition

In 1999, Lilly Wachowski and her sister released The Matrix, a science fiction action film written and directed by the two filmmakers.

The film starred Keanu Reeves as Neo, alongside Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, Gloria Foster, and Joe Pantoliano.

The story takes place in a future where intelligent machines control humanity through a simulated reality. Its narrative examines questions concerning perception, freedom, identity, and the relationship between human beings and technology.

The film combined martial arts choreography, digital visual effects, and camera techniques including *bullet time*, which allowed action sequences to appear to move around subjects in slowed motion.

The Matrix was commercially successful and won four Academy Awards in 2000: Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

Following its release, the Wachowskis began developing two sequels that would continue the story.

The Matrix Sequels and The Animatrix

In 2003, the Wachowskis released The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, completing the original film trilogy.

Both films continued the story of Neo and the struggle between humanity and the machines controlling the simulated world.

The sisters also participated in The Animatrix (2003), a collection of animated short films expanding the fictional universe of The Matrix.

The project brought together animation directors from Japan and other countries. The Wachowskis wrote several segments, including The Second Renaissance and Kid's Story.

They also contributed to the development of video games based on the franchise, including Enter the Matrix (2003) and The Matrix: Path of Neo (2005).

V for Vendetta and Speed Racer

In 2005, Lilly Wachowski and Lana wrote and produced V for Vendetta, a film based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd.

Directed by James McTeigue, the film starred Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving. Set in a dystopian Britain governed by an authoritarian regime, the story follows a masked revolutionary known as V.

The character's Guy Fawkes mask, adapted from the original graphic novel illustrations, became widely associated with the film.

In 2008, the Wachowskis wrote, directed, and produced Speed Racer, a live-action adaptation of the Japanese animated series.

The film starred Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, and Matthew Fox.

Its production relied heavily on digital environments and computer-generated imagery to reproduce the visual style of the original animated series.

Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending

In 2012, Lilly Wachowski and Lana collaborated with German director Tom Tykwer on Cloud Atlas, adapted from the novel by David Mitchell.

The film featured several interconnected stories taking place across different historical periods and imagined futures. Its cast included Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, and Hugh Grant.

The three filmmakers shared writing and directing responsibilities.

In 2015, the Wachowskis released Jupiter Ascending, a science fiction film starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Eddie Redmayne, and Sean Bean.

The story follows a woman who discovers that her identity is connected to a powerful extraterrestrial dynasty.

Sense8 and Television Production

In 2015, Lilly Wachowski and Lana created Sense8 with screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski for Netflix.

The science fiction series follows eight individuals living in different parts of the world who discover that they are mentally and emotionally connected.

The cast included Tuppence Middleton, Brian J. Smith, Doona Bae, Max Riemelt, Jamie Clayton, and Miguel Ángel Silvestre.

Lilly contributed to the writing, production, and direction of the first season. She subsequently stepped away from the series, while Lana continued directing later episodes and the concluding special.

Public Announcement of Her Gender Transition

In March 2016, Lilly Wachowski, who had previously worked professionally under the name Andy Wachowski, publicly announced that she was a transgender woman.

She explained that she had already disclosed her gender identity to family members, friends, and colleagues but had not intended to make a public announcement at that time.

Her statement followed an approach from a journalist seeking information about her transition.

Her older sister, Lana Wachowski, had publicly discussed her own gender transition in 2012.

Following her announcement, Lilly continued her work in film and television under her current name.

Work in Progress and Independent Productions

Between 2019 and 2021, Lilly Wachowski worked as a writer, director, and executive producer on Work in Progress, a comedy series broadcast by Showtime.

The series was created by Abby McEnany and Tim Mason and starred McEnany as a middle-aged woman navigating relationships, mental health concerns, and questions of identity.

Wachowski contributed to the show's writing and directed episodes during its two-season run.

She also supported independent productions and projects involving LGBTQ+ filmmakers and performers.

Lilly did not participate in the direction of The Matrix Resurrections (2021), the fourth Matrix film, which was directed solely by Lana Wachowski. She later explained that returning to the franchise did not appeal to her creatively at that stage of her life.

Film and Television Projects in 2025–2026

In 2025 and 2026, Lilly Wachowski continued developing independent screenplays and supporting film projects through production and executive producer roles.

She was initially attached to direct Trash Mountain, a film starring Zooey Deschanel and Jacki Weaver. However, she later left the directing position, which was taken over by Kris Swanberg.

In August 2026, she discussed her efforts to finance The Hunted, a thriller screenplay she co-wrote with her partner Mickey Ray Mahoney.

The proposed film features a predominantly transgender cast and was being developed with production support associated with Natasha Lyonne.

Wachowski stated that the production had experienced difficulty obtaining financing. As an alternative, she organized a staged reading of the screenplay in Los Angeles in August 2026.

As of November 2026, The Hunted had not been released as a completed feature film.

Personal Life

Lilly Wachowski married Alisa Blasingame in 1991. Blasingame was among the family members she thanked for supporting her when she publicly announced her transition in 2016.
