English actor, model, musician, and producer Robert Pattinson rose to international fame in a short time with his portrayals of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series. In 2010, Pattinson was ranked among the top influential figures by both Forbes and Time magazines. During the peak of the Twilight series, he was in a relationship with his co-star Kristen Stewart.
Robert Pattinson was born on May 13, 1986, in London, England. His mother, Clare, worked at a modeling agency, while his father, Richard Pattinson, was involved in car importing. He has two older sisters, Lizzy and Victoria. Pattinson was educated at Tower House School and Harrodian School, where he also received his first formal acting training by joining the Barnes Theatre Company.
Pattinson began modeling at the age of 20 in 2004 and built a promising career that included modeling for Hackett’s Fall 2007 collection. However, he left modeling in 2008, explaining that he was considered “too muscular and masculine” and no longer fit the industry’s preferred image.
His first acting experience came in 2004 with a supporting role in Ring of the Nibelungs. This was followed by a small role in Vanity Fair, which appeared only in collector’s edition DVDs and not in the theatrical cut. In 2005, he joined the stage play The Woman Before, but was dismissed after only a few performances.
Pattinson’s major breakthrough came with his role as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, a performance that earned him the “British Star of Tomorrow” award in 2005. This success directly led to his casting as Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series.
Based on the novels by Stephenie Meyer, the Twilight series became a global phenomenon. The first film, Twilight, released on November 21, 2008, turned Pattinson into a worldwide youth icon. He reprised his role in New Moon and Eclipse, and across the first three films won 17 awards, mainly from MTV Movie Awards and Teen Choice Awards. The final installment, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, was produced as two films—Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Breaking Dawn – Part 2—released in 2011 and 2012.
After Twilight, Pattinson portrayed the young Salvador Dalí in Little Ashes and worked on the short film The Summer House. He also served as a presenter at the 81st Academy Awards on February 22, 2009. A documentary titled Robsessed was produced about him by Revolver Entertainment.
An accomplished musician, Pattinson plays guitar and piano and composes music. He performed the songs Never Think and Let Me Sign for the Twilight soundtrack. In 2008, he was named one of the “Sexiest Men Alive” by People magazine. He lived in Los Angeles for many years and was known for keeping his personal life private. His relationship with Kristen Stewart ended in July 2013.
Among Pattinson’s projects during this period were Bel Ami, Water for Elephants, Unbound Captives, and the final installments of the Twilight saga. In 2015, he appeared in Queen of the Desert, directed by Werner Herzog, alongside Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Damian Lewis, and Mark Lewis Jones.
In 2025, Pattinson starred in Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon-ho for Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is based on the science fiction novel Edward Ashton’s Mickey7, in which Pattinson portrays the lead character, a crew member assigned to dangerous missions who can be repeatedly resurrected while retaining most of his memories.
