Sebastian Stan is a Romanian-born American actor who achieved global recognition for his portrayal of Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

Sebastian Stan was born on August 13, 1982, in Constanța, Romania. His parents divorced when he was two years old. At the age of eight, he and his mother, Georgeta Orlovschi, moved to Vienna, Austria, following the Romanian Revolution, where his mother worked as a pianist. Four years later, in 1994, after his mother married Anthony Fruhauf, the headmaster of a school in the United States, the family relocated to Rockland County, New York.

He studied at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. During his time there, he appeared in several school theater productions, including West Side Story, Over Here!, Harvey, Cyrano de Bergerac, and Little Shop of Horrors. Through a student exchange program, he spent one year in England receiving classical acting training at the Globe Theatre. He graduated in 2005.

Sebastian Stan became a United States citizen in 2002. He began his acting career the following year with a role in the television series Law & Order. His first television appearance came in 2003, when he played Justin Capshaw in the episode titled “Sheltered.” In 2007, he made his Broadway debut in Talk Radio, performing alongside Liev Schreiber and Stephanie March.

In 2008, he appeared as the boyfriend character in the music video Wake Up Call by Hayden Panettiere. In 2009, he portrayed Prince Jack Benjamin in the television series Kings, where he starred opposite Ian McShane.

In 2010, he appeared in Black Swan, directed by Darren Aronofsky, alongside Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey, and Winona Ryder. His breakthrough role followed in 2011 with Captain America: The First Avenger, where he portrayed Bucky Barnes alongside Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci, Samuel L. Jackson, and Toby Jones. He reprised this role in multiple subsequent films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Between 2008 and 2010, Sebastian Stan was in a relationship with actress Leighton Meester. In 2012, he was romantically involved with Jennifer Morrison, his co-star in Once Upon a Time, and the couple separated in 2013. In April 2014, he was linked to actress Margarita Levieva. Since July 2020, he has been in a relationship with Spanish actress Alejandra Onieva.

In 2015, he appeared in The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon, with a supporting cast that included Jessica Chastain, Michael Peña, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. In 2022, he starred in the action spy film The 355, directed by Simon Kinberg, alongside Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong'o, Penelope Cruz, Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing, and Edgar Ramírez. That same year, he appeared in the thriller Sharper, sharing the screen with Julianne Moore and John Lithgow.
