Mette Frederiksen is the youngest Prime Minister in the history of Denmark and has been serving as the Prime Minister of Denmark since June 27, 2019.
Mette Frederiksen was born on November 19, 1977, in Aalborg, Denmark, as the daughter of Flemming Frederiksen and Anette Frederiksen. Her father worked as a typographer, while her mother was a teacher. She graduated in 2000 from Aalborg University, Department of Administration and Social Sciences. She later completed her master’s degree in African Studies at the University of Copenhagen.
After pursuing a career as a trade unionist, Mette Frederiksen entered politics in 2001 when she was elected to the Copenhagen County Council. On November 20, 2001, she was elected as a Member of Parliament to the Folketing, the Danish Parliament, representing the Social Democratic Party from Copenhagen.
Following the Social Democratic Party’s victory in the 2011 general elections, party leader and Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt appointed Mette Frederiksen as Minister of Employment. She served as Minister of Employment from October 3, 2011, to October 10, 2014, and later as Minister of Justice from October 10, 2014, to June 28, 2015.
After the Social Democratic Party lost the 2015 general elections, Helle Thorning-Schmidt resigned from both the premiership and party leadership. Mette Frederiksen won the subsequent leadership election held on June 28, 2015, and has served as leader of the Social Democratic Party since that date.
Mette Frederiksen served as Leader of the Opposition in Denmark between June 28, 2015, and June 27, 2019. As leader of the Social Democratic Party, she led a coalition of left and center-left parties, including the Social Democrats, Social Liberals, Socialist People’s Party, Red–Green Alliance, the Faroese Social Democratic Party, and Greenland’s bloc, to victory in the 2019 general elections.
Following this electoral success, she was appointed Prime Minister by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and officially assumed office on June 27, 2019.
In 2019, Mette Frederiksen rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to purchase Greenland, calling the idea “absurd.”
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Mette Frederiksen visited Ukraine three times. On April 21, 2022, she traveled to Kyiv together with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, where they met Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy.
On November 1, 2022, Mette Frederiksen won the Danish general elections once again, securing another term as Prime Minister.
In September 2023, political commentators suggested that Mette Frederiksen could be selected as the successor to Jens Stoltenberg, whose term as NATO Secretary General was set to conclude.
