Satya Nadella has been serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Microsoft since February 4, 2014. Born in India, he is the first non-American CEO in the history of the company. In 2021, he also became the Chairman of the Board of Microsoft, succeeding John W. Thompson.
Satya Nadella was born on August 19, 1967, in Hyderabad, India, as the son of Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar and Prabhavati Yugandhar. His full name is Satya Narayana Nadella. He completed his early education at Hyderabad Public School. Nadella studied Electronics and Communication Engineering at Manipal University in Udupi, Karnataka, India, and graduated in 1988. After graduation, he moved to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, completing it in 1990. He later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he studied between 1994 and 1996 and graduated in 1996.
Satya Nadella began his professional career at Sun Microsystems (now part of Oracle Corporation), where he worked until 1992. In the same year, he joined Microsoft and went on to hold several key leadership positions within the company. During his tenure, he played an important role in the development of Bing and led significant initiatives involving Microsoft’s database systems, Windows Server, and developer tools. One of the most pivotal moments of his career was leading Microsoft’s transformation from traditional customer-focused software services to cloud computing solutions through Windows Azure, marking a major strategic shift for the company.
Satya Nadella also served as Senior Vice President responsible for Research and Development in the Online Services Division and as Vice President of the Microsoft Business Division. Following the retirement of Steve Ballmer, who had served as CEO for 14 years, Nadella officially assumed the role of CEO on February 4, 2014.
Satya Nadella married his college friend Anupama Nadella in 1992. The couple has three children named Zain Nadella, Tara Nadella, and Divya Nadella. He resides in Bellevue, Washington.
Satya Nadella has received numerous accolades for his leadership. In 2019, he was named Person of the Year by the Financial Times and Businessperson of the Year by Fortune magazine. In addition to his executive responsibilities, he serves on the boards of trustees of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the University of Chicago, and Starbucks.
In 2021, Satya Nadella further expanded his leadership role by becoming the Chairman of the Board of Microsoft, once again succeeding John W. Thompson.
