Natascha McElhone was born on December 14, 1969, in Surrey, England. Her birth name is Natasha Abigail Taylor. She has an older brother named Damon Taylor. Her mother, Noreen Taylor, and her father, Michael Taylor, were both journalists and divorced when she was two years old. After the divorce, her Irish mother moved the family to Brighton. Her stepfather was the journalist Roy Greenslade. During her early childhood, she took dance lessons.
She was educated at St. Mary's Hall School for Girls, an independent boarding school in Brighton, Sussex. McElhone later studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), graduating in 1993. She adopted her mother’s maiden name, McElhone, as her professional stage name.
Natascha McElhone began her acting career on stage, performing at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London in productions such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Richard III. She later appeared at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre in productions including The Count of Monte Cristo and The Cherry Orchard.
Her film career gained international recognition in 1996 when she appeared in Surviving Picasso, directed by James Ivory, alongside Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore. In 1998, she starred in The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, sharing the screen with Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, and Paul Giamatti. In the same year, she appeared in the action thriller Ronin, acting alongside Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Sean Bean, and Stellan Skarsgård.
In 2002, she worked with director Steven Soderbergh in the science fiction film Solaris, starring opposite George Clooney. Throughout her career, she has balanced roles in independent cinema, major studio productions, and television, earning acclaim for her refined screen presence and emotional depth.
In her personal life, Natascha McElhone married cosmetic surgeon Dr. Martin Hirigoyen Kelly on May 19, 1998. He died of a heart attack on May 20, 2008. The couple had three children: Theodore Kelly (born 2000), Otis Kelly (born 2003), and Rex Kelly (born 2008). Following her husband’s death, she documented her grief and daily life in a series of letters and journals, which were published in 2010 as the book After You: Letters of Love, and Loss, to a Husband and Father.
In 2014, she returned to the stage at the Royal Haymarket Theatre, portraying Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction. Between 2016 and 2017, she appeared in the television series Designated Survivor, playing Alex Kirkman, the wife of the U.S. president, alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Maggie Q. She later gained renewed prominence for her role as Dr. Catherine Halsey in the television series Halo.
