John Malkovich is an American film, television, and stage actor renowned for his distinctive presence, intellectual intensity, and emotionally distant yet magnetic performances. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential character actors in modern cinema.
John Gavin Malkovich was born on December 9, 1953, in Illinois, United States. His mother, Joe Anne Choisser, and his father, Daniel Leon Malkovich, raised him in a family of diverse European roots; his paternal grandfather was of Croatian origin. During high school, Malkovich was involved in athletics before enrolling at Eastern Illinois University.
In 1976, he left university to join the Chicago-based Steppenwolf Theatre Company, helping to establish the ensemble alongside his close friend Gary Sinise. Seven years later, he won an Obie Award for his performance in Sam Shepard’s play True West. He later starred opposite Dustin Hoffman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, a role he reprised in the 1985 television adaptation, earning an Emmy Award.
Malkovich transitioned to film in 1984 with Places in the Heart, portraying a blind man—a performance that earned him his first Academy Award nomination. The same year, he starred in The Killing Fields. His major cinematic breakthrough came with his portrayal of Vicomte de Valmont in Dangerous Liaisons, a role that cemented his international reputation.
Throughout his career, Malkovich became known for portraying morally ambiguous, intellectual, and often chilling characters. He played a psychopathic assassin in In the Line of Fire opposite Clint Eastwood, Colonel Kurtz in a television adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and delivered acclaimed performances in films such as The Portrait of a Lady, Mary Reilly, and the self-referential cult classic Being John Malkovich, directed by Spike Jonze.
His personal life included a marriage to actress Glenne Headly from August 2, 1982, until their divorce on January 1, 1988. On September 20, 1989, he married Nicoletta Peyran, with whom he has two children: Amandine Malkovich (born 1990) and Lowry Malkovich (born 1992). Between 1993 and 2003, Malkovich lived in France.
In later years, he appeared in major studio productions including Transformers: Dark of the Moon, produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Michael Bay, where he portrayed Bruce, acting alongside Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson, and Patrick Dempsey.
