Stay (2005)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Stay follows dedicated psychiatrist Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor), whose orderly professional life is disrupted when he encounters a deeply troubled young patient, Henry Lethem (Ryan Gosling). Henry claims that he intends to end his life on his 21st birthday, and Sam becomes obsessively determined to prevent the suicide.

As Sam delves further into Henry’s fractured psyche, he begins to sense that something far more unsettling lies beneath the young man’s words. The boundaries between clinical analysis, subconscious trauma, and lived reality start to dissolve. Sam’s emotional anchor, his girlfriend and former patient Lila (Naomi Watts), becomes increasingly distant as his behavior grows erratic and his perceptions unreliable.

The city itself—particularly :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}—transforms into a distorted mental landscape, reflecting Henry’s inner world rather than objective reality. Familiar streets and relationships take on an uncanny, dreamlike quality, mirroring Sam’s gradual loss of control over what he believes to be real.

As surreal incidents intensify, Sam finds himself trapped in a collapsing reality where identities blur and time fractures. The question at the heart of Stay becomes unavoidable: who is Henry Lethem, and how has he managed to so effortlessly fracture Sam Foster’s perception of existence? The film unfolds as a haunting meditation on guilt, consciousness, and the fragile line separating the mind from the world it believes it inhabits.
