Sleuth (2007)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Wealthy crime novelist Andrew Wyke (Michael Caine) invites a young and ambitious actor, Milo Tindle (Jude Law), to his lavish countryside mansion. Milo has been having an affair with Wyke’s wife, a fact that sets the stage for a tense psychological confrontation. Despite the apparent betrayal, Andrew presents himself as calm, controlled, and intriguingly cordial.

Wyke soon proposes an elaborate and unsettling scheme worthy of one of his own detective novels: Milo will stage a burglary, stealing Andrew’s wife’s jewelry, allowing the writer to claim the insurance money. What initially appears to be a mutually beneficial arrangement quickly transforms into a dangerous game of manipulation, power, and deception.

As the night unfolds, roles blur and identities shift. What began as a test of intellect and ego escalates into a ruthless battle of wits, where each man attempts to outmaneuver the other. The isolated mansion becomes a claustrophobic arena, amplifying paranoia and psychological tension.

Sleuth is a modern reinterpretation of the classic Sleuth story, reversing roles in a meta-cinematic twist. In the original version, Michael Caine portrayed the younger lover, while in this adaptation he embodies the betrayed husband, with Jude Law stepping into the role of the ambitious rival. The film delivers a sharp, dialogue-driven thriller that explores masculinity, jealousy, class conflict, and the seductive danger of games taken too far.
