Hugh Michael Jackman is an Australian film producer and actor, born in 1968. He is best known worldwide for his portrayal of Wolverine in the X-Men film series. Another major production he starred in is the 2004 film Van Helsing.
Hugh Jackman was born on October 12, 1968, in Sydney, Australia. He was the youngest of five children born to his English-born parents, Chris Jackman and Grace Watson. When Jackman was eight years old, his mother moved back to England, leaving him to be raised by his father—an accountant and graduate of Cambridge University—along with his siblings. Following this separation, his relationship with his mother was never close.
Jackman attended Pymble Public School and later Knox Grammar School. He graduated from the University of Technology Sydney with a degree in journalism. His introduction to acting happened by chance, as acting was a compulsory subject in his department. During this time, he also developed an interest in crafts and used money inherited from a relative to pursue further studies. In 1994, he graduated from Edith Cowan University.
Hugh Jackman’s first acting experiences came with the 1999 films Erskineville Kings and Paperback Hero. He also appeared in television productions such as Law of the Land, Halifax f.p., Blue Heelers, and Snowy River: The McGregor Saga.
In addition to screen acting, Jackman was active in theater, performing in Melbourne productions of Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard. His international breakthrough came when he starred in the lead role of Oklahoma!, staged in England. The performance was filmed for DVD release and television broadcast.
In 2002, Jackman joined the casting auditions for X-Men at the last minute and was initially considered for a supporting role. The role of Wolverine had been given to Dougray Scott, but Scott had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts with the Mission: Impossible film series. As a result, Jackman was cast as Wolverine. During filming, various techniques were used to make him appear shorter. The success of the film brought Jackman worldwide fame. He later reprised the role in X2: X-Men United (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006).
In 2004, Jackman won a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway production The Boy from Oz. He hosted the Tony Awards ceremonies in both 2004 and 2005. His success as a host earned him an Emmy Award in 2005 for Outstanding Individual Performance.
In 2005, rumors circulated that Jackman would replace Pierce Brosnan as the new James Bond. However, he declined the offer, and the role ultimately went to Daniel Craig.
Hugh Jackman married actress Deborra-Lee Furness in February 1996. The couple met on the set of Jackman’s first television role, Corelli. After Furness experienced two miscarriages, they adopted two children: Oscar Maximillian (born in 2000) and Ava Eliot (born in 2005). Jackman personally designed his engagement ring.
In 2005, Jackman and his assistant John Palermo founded the production company Seed Productions. The company’s first project was the film Wolverine, scheduled for release in 2008, in which Jackman also starred. Furness is actively involved in the company’s operations.
Hugh Jackman is left-handed and a passionate surfer. He plays the piano, violin, and guitar, and his favorite food is sushi. He does not smoke and finds it difficult to perform smoking scenes in films. He is described by those close to him as polite and friendly. In 1998, he sang the Australian national anthem in front of 100,000 people at the Australian cricket cup. He currently lives in Melbourne with his family.
His films scheduled for release in 2008 include Australia, Rebound Guy, The Amateur, and If You Could See Me Now. Jackman was selected by People magazine as one of the “50 Most Beautiful People in the World” for five consecutive years. He speaks German and is 1.89 meters tall.
